How long does a flight to the Moon take on a spacecraft? 🚀
The travel time from Earth to the Moon is different. From 8 hours to 4.5 months. Much depends on various factors. By 2025, technology is advancing. The numbers are the same, but space tourism is already looming on the horizon 🌕.
The Moon is our satellite. The average distance is 384,400 km. The speed record is still held by “New Horizons”. A NASA probe. It flew past the Moon just 8 hours and 35 minutes after launch in 2006.
When it comes to targeted missions, it's more complicated. “Luna-1” reached its destination in 34 hours in 1959. And the famous “Apollo 11”? Almost 110 hours from launch to Armstrong's landing.
Fuel decides everything. It seems that modern missions are saving on it. They fly longer, but cheaper. They use Earth's gravity for smart trajectories 🔥.
“Bereshit” from Israel took 48 days in 2019. Gradually expanded the orbit. But NASA's CAPSTONE is a real long-liver. The small 25-kg CubeSat flew for as long as 4.5 months to lunar orbit in 2022.
The stages of the mission are different. Up to 90% of the weight at launch is fuel. You need to break free from Earth's gravity. Fuel savings in orbit are critical. Every extra kilogram? Huge money.
Mark Blanton from NASA believes that the mission's objective determines the flight time. First, they assess the rockets and their thrust. This influences the size of the spacecraft. Then, they chart the optimal route.
Funny, but by 2025 a tourist flight to the Moon could cost around a million dollars. It's not so clear whether this will become a reality. It seems like a new era is opening up - when the Moon is accessible not only to states but also to individuals 🌠.
