The President of Kyrgyzstan has signed a law on the state digital currency.
The new law recognizes the digital som as the national currency and a legal means of payment in Kyrgyzstan.
According to the document, the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan (NBK) has obtained exclusive rights to issue the digital som, develop rules for its circulation, and manage a specialized platform for the third form of the national currency. The digital som will simplify budget payments and increase the transparency of transactions, the country’s authorities believe.
Earlier, a representative of the National Bank of Kyrgyzstan told journalists that testing of the digital som platform is scheduled for the second half of the year; however, the final decision on the full-scale release of the Central Bank Digital Currency of Kyrgyzstan is not expected until the end of 2026.
In March, the government of Kyrgyzstan raised the minimum charter capital requirements for cryptocurrency exchanges from 100 million to 10 billion soms ( from $1.14 million to $114.3 million).
