OpenAI teams up with AMD to create a new AI Computing Power giant: 6GW GPU deployment initiated, with the option to purchase 160 million shares of AMD.
With the rapid development of generative AI technology, the scale of the Computing Power required behind it is also rising exponentially. To respond to this wave, OpenAI and AMD jointly announced on October 6, 2025, the establishment of a multi-generational product, multi-year strategic cooperation protocol, planning to deploy a total of up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPU Computing Power. The first batch of deployment will begin in the second half of 2026, utilizing the brand new generation Instinct MI450 series GPU, with a scale of 1 gigawatt, officially starting the Depth of cooperation between both parties.
Initial deployment of 1 GW, aiming for launch in the second half of 2026.
According to the announcement, OpenAI will launch the first batch of 1GW GPU deployment in the second half of 2026, using AMD's latest generation Instinct MI450 series chips. This deployment is the first phase of the overall 6GW plan, which will gradually expand to the full 6GW as the deployment scale increases.
This protocol represents AMD officially becoming OpenAI's core computing strategy partner. Both parties will jointly optimize the product roadmap, starting with the Instinct MI450 and expanding to future generations of GPU and integrated architecture AI solutions. In fact, the collaboration between OpenAI and AMD began with the MI300X series, continued to the MI350X, and has now further upgraded to a closer long-term strategic alliance.
OpenAI has acquired options for up to 160 million shares of AMD stock.
In order to further strengthen their strategic interests, AMD has granted OpenAI options for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. These options will vest in phases based on OpenAI's actual deployment progress:
Phase 1: With the deployment of 1GW, it belongs to the first batch of stock options.
Subsequent phase: As the deployment amount gradually rises to 6GW, more stock options will be allocated successively.
Attribution conditions: In addition to deployment volume, it is also related to AMD stock price performance and OpenAI achieving technical and commercial milestones.
AMD Chairperson Dr. Lisa Su stated, "We are very excited to collaborate with OpenAI to deliver large-scale AI computing power globally. This partnership combines the strongest technologies and visions from both sides, marking an important step in advancing the AI ecosystem."
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized: "This collaboration is key to realizing the potential of AI. AMD's leadership in high-performance chips will help us accelerate the implementation of AI technology, benefiting more people."
According to AMD's CFO Jean Hu, this collaboration is expected to bring AMD potential revenues of tens of billions of dollars and significantly improve its non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS). For OpenAI, this means obtaining a more stable and advanced AI hardware foundation; for AMD, this is an excellent opportunity to significantly strengthen its competitiveness in the AI chip market.
