On the morning of December 11, local time, Choi Yan-kyung, president of the Korean Law Professors Association and professor of law at Seoul National University, held a press conference at the Seoul Foreign Correspondents’ Club to express the views of the South Korean law professors on South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s launch of “emergency martial law” and the subsequent political crisis in South Korea. Choi expressed strong concern about the current state of politics and the rule of law in South Korea, saying that Yoon Suk-yeol’s “emergency martial law” and the deployment of military personnel to try to prevent the normal operation of the South Korean parliament, including the announcement after the incident that he would delegate his term of office and the political settlement to the ruling party, are suspected of serious violations of the constitution. Choi said that the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol at this stage is a constitutional “order” enshrined in South Korea’s constitution. In addition to this, all so-called “order” suspected of violating the constitution should be rejected.
