WTI Crude Falls to $75.22 on August 5 as Hormuz Strait Talks Show Mixed Signals

According to NYMEX data on August 5 (U.S. Eastern Time), WTI September crude fell $0.55 to $75.22 per barrel, while Brent October crude rose $0.09 to $79.45 per barrel. The mixed price action reflects competing expectations surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump said the U.S. is conducting "very good discussions" with Iran and warned that failure to reopen the strait quickly would result in "very strong damage" to Iran. However, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi clarified that a new agreement would not mean full reopening, stating that existing temporary shipping routes would close and a significant portion of vessel traffic would be diverted through Iranian territorial waters.
