Abstract generation in progress

The actual human traffic to Wikipedia has fallen by about 8% compared to the same period last year, according to the Wikimedia Foundation. The reason is believed to be that users are increasingly relying on AI-generated summaries instead of directly accessing this encyclopedia page.

Currently, nearly 60% of searches on Google end with answers displayed directly on the results page, largely based on Wikipedia content, causing a significant fall in indirect traffic to the original pages.

Publishers call this a “existential threat,” accusing technology platforms of using their content without compensation. According to News/Media Alliance, Google is “draining” the value of publishers by using their data to train AI, while not allowing them to opt out if they still want to appear in search results.

Wikimedia stated that this fall not only affects readers but also leads to fewer contributors and donations, threatening the community operating model of Wikipedia. The organization is developing a framework for source attribution rights, tightening third-party data access, and seeking to engage the younger generation through YouTube and TikTok.

Recent studies also show that AI is dominating web content: by May 2025, nearly 50% of new articles on the Internet will be generated by AI, and this figure could exceed 90% next year.
