Russia and Brazil are aligning strategies across BRICS, the UN, and G20 to expand emerging economies’ influence, reshape global governance, and deepen their strategic partnership worldwide.

Russia and Brazil Build Coordinated Front to Reshape UN, BRICS, and G20 Flow

BRICS, the United Nations (UN), and the Group of 20 (G20) were central to discussions between Russia and Brazil as both countries sought to enhance their cooperation in multilateral arenas. The meeting reflected a shared intent to coordinate strategies across leading global platforms while strengthening their strategic partnership at the bilateral level.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira held talks during the UN General Assembly’s 80th session, according to a Sept. 27 report by Tass. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained: “The parties discussed relevant issues related to deepening the Russian-Brazilian strategic partnership and implementing the schedule of bilateral contacts at various levels.” The ministry added:

On the international agenda, the ministers discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in multilateral forums, primarily in the UN, BRICS, which Brazil chairs this year, and the G20.

The currently expanded BRICS group, an association of major emerging economies, comprises its original five members—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—along with the new members admitted in 2024 and 2025, which include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Indonesia.

The talks emphasized both countries’ drive to influence the direction of multilateral institutions. Brazil’s BRICS chairmanship in 2025 provides it an opportunity to shape the bloc’s agenda on development and cooperation, while Russia aims to leverage the platform to balance Western influence. Their coordination within the G20 and UN further illustrates a strategy to amplify the collective voice of emerging economies in areas such as trade, finance, and global security.
