Russia pays salaries for the first time in digital rubles, paving the way for the use of CBDC

Russia has just made its first salary payment in digital rubles, the central bank digital currency (CBDC). The Russian Ministry of Finance confirmed that a government official received their salary directly in digital rubles via a wallet on the platform of the Central Bank of Russia.

This initiative, developed in conjunction with the central bank, aims to integrate digital currency into federal budget activities, including internal transfers and payments from the national treasury. The first recipient is Anatoly Aksakov, Chairman of the Financial Market Committee of the State Duma, who is also conducting some trial transactions.

The digital Ruble has been developed since 2021, with related laws passed in 2023, along with pilot programs with banks, businesses, and individuals. The official launch is expected on 1/9/2026. Early applications include payments for the Moscow Metro, the first real estate transaction, and parking fees at Pulkovo Airport, St. Petersburg.
