US media: Trump's use of the National Guard sparks controversy

Abstract generation in progress

According to the BBC, U.S. President Trump's decision to federalize the National Guard, which is usually subordinate to state governments, is rare. According to the military's website, Title 10 of the U.S. Code — the same law Trump invoked — was used to take over the National Guard during the Civil Rights Movement. Historical data shows that three former U.S. presidents, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Johnson, used the National Guard to protect civil rights and maintain public order. The unit was also taken over by the Union during the 1967 Detroit riots, the 1968 riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and the 1970 New York Post Strike. According to CNN, the last time a U.S. president exercised that power was during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, when four white police officers were acquitted after being videotaped beating a black driver, sending shockwaves across the country.
