US Durable goods orders jumped 1.8% in September, the best print in five months. Most of that came from a 4.6% surge in transportation, led by a 28.4% spike in civilian aircraft bookings.
Strip out the planes and the picture softens. Orders excluding transportation rose only 0.5%. Core capital goods orders, the cleaner read on business investment plans, also rose 0.5% after a stronger 1.6% gain the month before.
What it signals: manufacturers are still booking work and the goods side of the economy is not rolling over. The strength is concentrated in aircraft rather than a broad pickup
