The policy combination coming out of India lately is worth a closer look: the Reserve Bank of India has proposed that gold funds and ETFs no longer be backed by physical gold, while SEBI has notified asset management companies to restrict new retail investments in gold and silver funds. Taken together, the message isn’t complicated: demand for gold in India is so strong that there isn’t enough physical gold to go around, so they have to start by tightening the spigot on “paper gold.”
