Tether has just delivered a major transparency milestone, but there is an important detail that makes the headline even more interesting. Its first full independent financial statement audit by KPMG U.S. found that Tether’s reserves exceeded its liabilities by $6.814 billion as of December 31, 2025. KPMG issued an unqualified opinion on the 2025 financial statements, giving the stablecoin issuer a significant credibility boost after years of debate around reserve transparency.
WHY $6.8B MATTERS
The number represents the cushion between Tether’s reported reserve assets and its liabilities at the end of 2025. In simple terms, the company had billions of dollars of assets above its obligations at that reporting date.
That distinction matters because the $6.8B figure is not today's reserve surplus. Tether's more recent Q2 2026 attestation, covering June 30, showed approximately $4.11 billion of excess reserves, with total assets of about $187.75 billion against liabilities of approximately $183.64 billion.
So the real story is not simply “Tether has $6.8B today.” The stronger takeaway is that an independent full audit has now confirmed a substantial reserve cushion at year-end, while subsequent quarterly reporting provides a newer picture of the balance sheet.
THE SCALE OF USDT IS THE REAL TEST
Tether's importance extends far beyond one balance-sheet number. By the end of Q2 2026, USDT circulation had reached approximately $184.6 billion, while Tether reported about $1.5 billion in Q2 net operating profit. The company also increased its physical gold holdings to more than 146 metric tons.
That scale makes reserve quality extremely important. USDT is used throughout crypto markets as a liquidity layer, settlement asset and dollar-denominated store of value. The larger the circulating supply becomes, the more closely traders and institutions watch the assets standing behind it.
THE TRANSPARENCY STORY JUST GOT STRONGER
The KPMG development is particularly significant because a full financial statement audit goes beyond the recurring reserve attestations that investors have previously relied upon. The audit covers Tether's 2025 financial statements and resulted in an unqualified opinion, meaning the auditor did not qualify its opinion on those statements.
That does not mean every future reserve position is guaranteed, nor does one audit eliminate every question surrounding a rapidly changing balance sheet. What it does provide is a stronger independently reviewed financial reference point.
WATCH THE GAP, NOT JUST THE HEADLINE
There is another important signal here.
Tether's reserve cushion moved from approximately $8.23 billion at the end of Q1 2026 to $4.11 billion at the end of Q2. The decline deserves attention even though reserves remained above liabilities.
For me, this is where the analysis becomes more useful than the headline.
A growing USDT supply combined with a healthy reserve surplus can strengthen confidence in the ecosystem. But investors should continue watching the relationship between total assets, liabilities, circulating USDT, reserve composition and excess capital each quarter.
THE BIGGER STABLECOIN SIGNAL
Tether's position also highlights how important stablecoins have become to the broader digital-asset economy. This is no longer simply a question of whether one token maintains a dollar peg. The industry increasingly depends on stablecoins for liquidity, trading pairs, collateral, settlement and movement of capital across markets.
That makes transparency a competitive advantage.
The latest audit therefore arrives at an important moment: institutional participation in digital assets continues to mature, while regulators and market participants are demanding greater visibility into stablecoin issuers.
