Musk’s “Putin–Trump Tunnel”? Kremlin Adviser Proposes an $8 Billion Link Between Russia and the U.S.

Could Elon Musk literally connect two continents? According to a bold new proposal from the Kremlin, it might soon be possible. Kirill Dmitriev, an economic adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, has suggested building an undersea tunnel between Russia and Alaska — a project he claims could be completed in under eight years for no more than $8 billion, if powered by Elon Musk’s Boring Company.

A Tunnel to Change the World “Imagine – a Putin–Trump Tunnel as a symbol of unity between two great nations,” Dmitriev wrote on X, tagging Elon Musk in his post. He asserted that Musk’s tunneling technology could slash the cost from the estimated $65 billion required by traditional methods. According to Dmitriev, the tunnel connecting the continents across the Bering Strait would not only be an engineering marvel but also a “project that connects humanity.” He added that it would be a “revolutionary, fully automated megaproject with zero workers inside the tunnel,” showcasing Boring Company’s cutting-edge systems.

Revisiting the “Bridge of Peace” from the Cold War The Kremlin envoy also recalled that the idea of linking Alaska and Chukotka is not new. During the Cold War, both the U.S. and the Soviet Union discussed a “World Peace Bridge” to connect the two superpowers. Dmitriev even shared an archival blueprint from the Kennedy era, marked with the note:

“The Kennedy–Khrushchev World Peace Bridge — could and should be built between Alaska and Russia. Immediately.” Dmitriev emphasized that such a project could have a transformative economic impact, opening opportunities for joint resource exploration, rail and freight transport, and thousands of new jobs on both sides of the strait.

“The Time Has Come to Connect Continents,” Says Dmitriev “The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has already financed the first railway bridge between Russia and China. Now it’s time to go further — to connect Russia and the United States for the first time in human history,” said Dmitriev, who has headed RDIF since its creation in 2011. So far, he has not confirmed whether the proposal has been discussed with U.S. officials or Musk himself. According to The Moscow Times, the idea remains a publicly shared concept, yet one that has already sparked international debate.

The Political Backdrop: Diplomacy Meets Ambition The proposal surfaced shortly after a phone call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, in which the two leaders reportedly agreed to hold another peace meeting in Budapest, following their 2024 summit in Alaska. While the date remains unspecified, the discussions are said to focus on ending the war in Ukraine. As the world watches geopolitical tensions unfold, Dmitriev’s vision offers a striking blend of technology, diplomacy, and symbolism. The so-called “Putin–Trump Tunnel” could become not just an engineering wonder, but a metaphorical bridge between two divided worlds — if, of course, the idea ever leaves the drawing board.
