US Consumer Sentiment Nears a Record Low, and the Warning Goes Beyond One Number

The U.S. consumer sentiment index finished October at 48.0, making it the second-lowest reading in the survey’s history. The record low was 44.8 in May. October’s result was only slightly below September’s 48.1, but the bigger message is that confidence has remained extremely weak for months. Sentiment is now 10% below its level a year ago and 15% below where it stood in February.
