Circle’s cirBTC Is Now Live on Ethereum: 1:1 Reserves Verifiable On-Chain, but Wrapped Assets Still Carry Custodial Risk
Circle has launched cirBTC on Ethereum, backed 1:1 by reserves held in custody by Circle National Trust Bank and verifiable on-chain, but without moving native BTC to Ethereum. The initial supply is approximately 40 tokens, with a market capitalization of about $3.11 million. It remains in the early stages, and its liquidity and collateral depth still need to improve. cirBTC enables cross-chain accounting by custodying BTC and minting an equivalent amount of tokens, with plans to enter the Arc network in the future. Risks include disruptions to redemption channels, smart contract and cross-chain risks, and the need for ongoing disclosure of reserves and minting and burning rules.
