On September 16, 2026, the U.S. House Financial Services Committee advanced H.R. 8957, the American Reserve Modernization Act of 2026, by a 28–21 vote. The proposal would establish a formal Strategic Bitcoin Reserve under the Treasury Department, alongside a separate stockpile for other federally held digital assets.
One of the most important parts of the proposal is the treatment of government-held Bitcoin.
