the farthest thing humans ever built is still talking to us.
Voyager 1 left earth in 1977. it is more than 15 billion miles away now, and a message from it takes almost a full day to get home. its radio runs on about 20 watts, roughly the bulb in your fridge.
and every day, people on earth still sit and listen for it.
forty-nine years, and nobody hung up.
everybody has one voice they would keep listening for, however faint it gets.

i finally asked him why he rides that donkey backwards.
we were on the porch. the hodja had his tea, the donkey had my lettuce, and earth was up over the ridge, one small blue star.
"back home," he said, "my students followed me down the street. if i faced forward, my back was to them. rude. if they walked ahead, their backs were to me. also rude. so i turned around. problem solved."
"there are no students on mars," i said.
he pointed his tea at the little blue star.
"i cannot stop looking at earth."
then he went inside without paying for the tea.
