Why does Bitcoin fall at the same time as artificial intelligence stocks?
Looking at the screens, we are once again reminded of how quickly global risk appetite can shift. The sharp sell-off in U.S. stock markets on Thursday, November 5, 2026, shook not only technology stocks but also the cryptocurrency market. So, what lies behind this scenario, and what does Bitcoin’s relationship with U.S. equities tell us?
How did the unraveling of artificial intelligence stocks put pressure on crypto?
Last Thursday, the Nasdaq recorded its largest daily decline since April 2025, losing 5.5% of its value—an evaporation of approximately $2.5 trillion in market capitalization. At the heart of this decline are growing concerns regarding the sustainability of massive capital expenditures on AI infrastructure, as well as fears of stricter regulations following the elections. In particular, following the Democrats' victory in the midterm elections, there is talk that regulatory measures—which could potentially slow the development of artificial intelligence—might be on the horizon. While this triggered a heavy sell-off in semiconductor and AI-related stocks, cryptocurrencies also felt the impact of this global flight from risk.
Is Bitcoin behaving like a "risk asset"?
The most striking reflection of this sell-off was the price movement of Bitcoin. Between November 5 and 6, Bitcoin lost more than 6% of its value, falling below the $75,000 mark—its lowest level since mid-September. This decline is no coincidence. The 30-day correlation coefficient between Bitcoin and the Nasdaq 100 has hovered between 0.6 and 0.69 throughout 2026—well above historical averages. This high correlation suggests that Bitcoin is currently trading more like a high-beta technology asset than as "digital gold" or an independent store of value. In short, when artificial intelligence (AI) stocks decline, the crypto market tends to react in the same direction and with similar intensity.
What does this correlation signify?
This high correlation carries several significant implications for investors. First, the portfolio diversification benefit of Bitcoin diminishes during periods when it exhibits such a strong correlation with AI stocks; holding both assets separately fails to provide the expected diversification.
Second, price movements in the crypto market have become more sensitive to macroeconomic developments and overall risk appetite rather than being driven by their own internal dynamics. For short-term traders, this translates into higher volatility and uncertainty, while for long-term investors, it creates an environment that demands patience and discipline.
Why is next week’s inflation data critical?
Another pivotal factor that will shape market direction is the U.S. inflation data due for release next week. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is set to be announced on Tuesday, November 10, followed by the Producer Price Index (PPI) on Friday, November 13. Market expectations point to a decline in headline inflation to 0.3% and core inflation to 0.2% on a monthly basis.
These figures will directly influence expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision in December. The market is currently pricing in a 25-basis-point interest rate hike for December. If inflation data comes in higher than expected, it could lead the Federal Reserve to adopt a more hawkish stance, increasing pressure on risk assets. Conversely, data that falls below expectations could provide some relief to the markets.
In short, the crypto market is currently being shaped by fluctuations in artificial intelligence (AI) stocks and macroeconomic uncertainties. Bitcoin’s high correlation with the Nasdaq suggests that it is perceived as a risk asset, often moving in tandem with AI stocks within investment portfolios.
The inflation data to be released in the coming days will serve as the primary catalyst determining the direction of this landscape. During such periods, the most prudent approach is to avoid panic, act in accordance with one’s own risk tolerance, and maintain a diversified portfolio.
