#USAIStocksHitHard
The trigger was the post-election shift in mood, but the own valuation issue of US AI shares is also real. This is the second layer. That is why AI shares fell harder than the broad market. Is it time to buy the dip? I also see a chance, but "loading up in one go" and "buying in stages" are two different things. I choose the second one.
🔍 First, look at which one fell harder
On Nov 5, the tech-heavy index fell 5.52% to 24,315 and moved into correction zone. The drop from the early-October peak was 11.9%. The top 100 tech shares fell 6.36%. The same day, the broad market fell 4.36%, the industry-heavy index fell 3.44%.
The fact that AI fell harder than the broad market is the answer itself: If this were only general fear, all of them would have fallen by a similar amount. The gap is in AI's own issue.
Three layers, clearly:
First layer: Outside mood — a shift in outlook after the election
After the election, the outlook for tighter rules on AI and a slower build-out of data centers came to the fore. This is not "tech is safe," but "the most crowded trade is sold first": When the mood shifts, the most inflated side is emptied first.
Second layer: AI's own funding issue — the spending story is being repriced
The sell-off was heaviest right where the spending is: The chip index fell 12.3%, the chip fund fell 11.2%. The split: Nvidia fell 9.3%, AMD fell 17.4%, Micron fell 17.3%, SanDisk fell 21.8%, CoreWeave fell 10.5%, Intel fell 10.5%.
This was not a one-day event: In October, over 2 trillion dollars of value was wiped from tech, on Nov 5 alone about 2.5 trillion dollars of value was wiped. Weeks of risk cuts by big money are solid proof that it is early to say "the bottom is in."
Third layer: Crowded positions — everyone was long the same trade
For two years, AI was the one trade every fund had to hold. When it broke, there was no one left to buy. The over 9% drop in Nvidia was the sharpest drop since Jan 2025. The over 6% drop in the top 100 tech shares was one of the sharpest drops since March 2020.
This shows that too many people were long the night before, and too many positions were cleared. The good side: the market is now less crowded; the bad side: trust was shaken — the Fear Index fell from 50 to 28, a month ago it was at 71.
🧊 The only structural bright spot, but do not count it as a reason to buy
AI demand has not vanished. Data centers are still being built, chips are still being ordered, and on Friday the tech index bounced 1.09% to 24,579, the chip index rose 4.21%, AMD rose 11%.
But let's be clear: A one-day bounce does not mean buying appetite is back. It may only be short-covering after an oversold panic. To call this a "bottom signal" is to over-read the data. It only shows that, for one day, sellers got tired. This is a plus, not a reason to buy the dip.
⚠️ Why I do not say "load up in one go" now
① The chance of a December rate hike has risen to 80%
On Friday, nonfarm payrolls rose 165,000, the market outlook was 65,000. It came in at more than twice the outlook. The jobless rate fell to 4.1%, below the outlook. August and September figures were revised up by a combined 84,000. After the data, the market pricing for a 25 basis point hike in December jumped from 67% to the 79%-80% band.
Rising hike outlook + a 0.68% rise in the Dollar Index to 102.29 — this is the mix high-multiple growth shares like least. In a setting where cash is getting tighter, buying the dip on mood can mean getting caught in the middle of the fall.
② The tech index has fallen for four straight weeks
Yes, Friday saw a bounce. But the index fell 3.37% for the week as a whole, and this was the fourth weekly fall in a row. There is an oversold bounce, but no trend turn.
③ The AI story is shrinking, and this matters more than price moves
Anthropic is set to start its IPO roadshow next week, and investor valuation outlook has fallen from the 2 trillion dollar level to the 1.2-1.3 trillion dollar band. OpenAI, in its latest funding round, saw valuation fall from the 1.5 trillion dollar level to the 1.25 trillion dollar level, with the amount raised shrinking by at least a third. Even the two most central firms in AI are lowering valuation outlook. This shows that this round of AI spending story is being repriced. As a high-beta asset, the mid-term valuation anchor for AI shares is also loosening.
🎯 My staged buying plan
Here I take Nvidia as the gauge for the AI trade, because where Nvidia goes, the sector goes.
Current state: After the over 9% drop, price is in the 185-190 dollar band. RSI is near 35, it has not yet moved into the oversold zone below 30. Momentum is weak but not spent. This means "the fall is slowing," not "the fall is over."
First stage (small, 25% of the plan): Current price band, or a retest of the Nov 5 low. Reason: This is a support zone that was tested before, and even if it breaks, the stop-loss distance is not far. Second stage (mid, 35%): Add if the index falls another 3-4% and Nvidia tests the next major support 8-10% lower. Third stage (largest, 40%): Near the Oct 2025 low / 200-day average band, the next major mental level and the structural support from the prior rise.
Stop-loss discipline: If this structural support also breaks on rising volume and the index closes below 23,500, this is no longer a "pullback" but a "trend turn." Admit you were wrong, do not grow the error by averaging down.
Signals that would confirm the bottom (to add to the position):
1. In AI leaders, 2-3 days in a row of big-money net buying, with the chip index holding up better than the tech index; 2. A close above the first resistance at 25,200 and a push on the 25,800-26,200 rejection zone; 3. A move in the Fear Index from the fear zone at 28 to above 40.
