My initial take: The 5.5% drop in ETH appears to be a combination of a broader market trend toward risk aversion and weaknesses specific to Ethereum, rather than just a sell-off driven by tech stocks.
Instead of viewing this decline as an immediate buying opportunity, I would prefer to wait for some form of confirmation.
The critical distinction here is: Is ETH simply tracking the broader market downturn, or is capital actively flowing out of Ethereum?
1. To what extent is the sell-off driven by tech stocks?
Strong macro pressure
The sell-off in U.S. markets on November 5th was quite significant:
* Nasdaq Composite: down approximately 5.5%.
* Nasdaq 100: down 6.4%.
* S&P 500: down 4.4%.
* Bitcoin: down approximately 5.2%.
* Ethereum: down approximately 7.5%, according to market data.
This serves as strong evidence that ETH has been affected by the negative sentiment across the broader market for risk assets.
However, the fact that ETH has underperformed relative to Bitcoin suggests that there is additional pressure specific to Ethereum.
2. Is there any improvement in capital flows toward Ethereum? Weak capital flow outlook
Three developments are notable and concerning:
October ETH ETF inflows/outflows: -$1.61 billion – Negative (Bearish signal)
November 5 ETF inflows/outflows: -$99.9 million (partial) – Negative (Bearish signal)
October Ethereum TVL (Total Value Locked): -17.51% – Negative (Bearish signal)
Furthermore, there are signs of forced selling: over $1 billion worth of crypto assets were liquidated within a 24-hour period, with long positions—particularly those involving ETH—being hit the hardest.
This indicates that the decline is not merely a reaction to movements in the stock market. Ethereum entered this wave of selling already facing an environment of weak institutional demand.
3. Would I take this decline as an opportunity to buy?
My preference would be as follows:
Wait for confirmation
Primary preference
I would avoid opening a large position while ETF outflows persist and the ETH/BTC pair remains weak.
Buy incrementally
This option is suitable only for investors with a long-term horizon who are prepared to accept the risk of further declines. You might consider breaking your purchases down into smaller, staggered entries. Stay on the sidelines
For short-term investors, this is the most sensible approach until the selling pressure eases and a support level is established.
4. What would convince me that ETH has hit bottom? I monitor these four signals:
* ETF inflows: Positive net inflows occurring over several consecutive days.
* ETH/BTC: Ethereum beginning to outperform Bitcoin.
* Spot demand: An increase in buying volume, rather than just short covering.
* Price structure: ETH forming a "higher low" and reclaiming a key resistance level.
A single green daily candle is not sufficient confirmation.
My current assessment:
Cautiously bearish in the short term.
I see two forces at play:
* Macroeconomic environment: U.S. tech stocks are undergoing a significant correction.
* Ethereum fundamentals: Institutional ETF demand and ecosystem liquidity have weakened.
The macroeconomic sell-off accounts for much of the current pressure; however, weaker capital inflows into Ethereum explain why ETH is particularly vulnerable.
My approach: Rather than trying to catch the exact bottom, I prefer to wait for a clearer bottom to form and then accumulate positions gradually.
A key question remains: Will institutional capital return to ETH, or will it continue to concentrate in Bitcoin?
This could determine whether Ethereum’s next recovery will be robust or merely a temporary rebound.
