ETH Drops 5.5%: Tech Selloff or Ethereum's Own Weakness?
Ethereum's latest decline is a reminder that even major crypto assets are not insulated from stress in traditional markets. When technology stocks sell off sharply, investors often reduce exposure to other risk-sensitive assets as well. But ETH has another problem: its recent performance has been weaker than Bitcoin's, and capital-flow data suggests that this is not simply a one-day reaction to Wall Street.
The macro pressure is real
The November 5 selloff was broad. The Nasdaq dropped around 5.5%, the S&P 500 lost roughly 4.4%, and semiconductor stocks suffered an especially severe decline. Bitcoin and Ethereum also moved lower as investors reduced risk exposure.
This connection matters because crypto increasingly trades as part of the wider risk-asset environment. When investors become concerned about technology valuations, AI investment returns, economic uncertainty or tighter financial conditions, selling can spread into digital assets.
Ethereum is particularly exposed to this shift because it is often treated as a higher-beta asset. In other words, when market sentiment deteriorates, ETH can experience greater downside pressure than Bitcoin.
But Ethereum has an internal capital-flow problem too
The bigger concern is that Ethereum entered this selloff with an already fragile backdrop.
Gate Research's October market review reported approximately $1.607 billion in net outflows from U.S. spot ETH ETFs. It also recorded a 17.51% decline in Ethereum's DeFi total value locked during the month, alongside a broader contraction in stablecoin supply across crypto markets.
These figures do not prove that investors have permanently lost confidence in Ethereum. ETF redemptions can reverse, and DeFi activity changes with market prices. However, they do show that the asset was facing liquidity and allocation pressure before the latest technology-stock decline.
That distinction is important. A temporary macro-driven correction can recover when sentiment improves. Persistent capital outflows and weaker ecosystem activity require a stronger recovery in demand.
What the chart is telling me
On my November 6 ETH/USDT chart, price is around $2,232. The RSI is approximately 39, while MACD remains negative. This suggests selling momentum is still present, even though the market may be approaching levels where buyers begin testing the downside.
The first important support area is around $2,183–$2,156. A sustained move below this zone would make the current weakness more concerning.
On the recovery side, $2,368 is an initial level to watch. Above that, the $2,484–$2,499 area is a more significant resistance zone. Reclaiming these levels would provide better evidence that buyers are regaining control.
These are chart-based reference levels, not guaranteed turning points. A temporary bounce alone would not confirm a trend reversal.
My Take
I would not automatically buy a 5.5% decline just because the price looks cheaper. The combination of negative momentum, recent ETF outflows and weaker DeFi activity makes patience a reasonable strategy.
For a longer-term investor, gradual accumulation may be worth considering if the investment thesis remains intact and the risk is manageable. For a short-term trader, I would prefer to see support hold, selling pressure ease and price reclaim an important resistance level before treating the dip as a confirmed opportunity.
Ethereum's long-term ecosystem potential and its short-term market structure are two different things. Both deserve attention.
What is your approach at these levels: buying the dip, staying on the sidelines, or waiting for a clearer bottom?
Not financial advice.
