Gate Guard Now Available for Free: Account Security Needs More Than a Strong Password

In crypto, protecting an account is just as important as protecting a trading strategy. A profitable position can be managed with stop-losses and risk limits, but an account compromise can put everything at risk before the owner even realizes something is wrong.

Gate Guard introduces an additional account-protection mechanism for eligible users. It is available to activate without a purchase fee, but the important detail is understanding what it covers, when protection actually starts, and what users must maintain to remain eligible.

What kind of risks does it address?

The plan is designed for certain unauthorized asset transfers resulting from account compromises. Examples include phishing attacks, malware, remote device control, stolen phones, SIM theft and fraudulent SIM replacement.

These are realistic risks because attackers do not always need to break a password directly. They may target email accounts, mobile numbers, devices or authentication methods to gain control of an account.

However, the distinction between an unauthorized transfer and a transfer personally approved by the account holder is important. According to the published plan, transfers initiated or authorized by the user, including transfers made after being deceived by a third party, are not covered. Operational mistakes and market losses are also outside its scope.

Free activation does not mean instant protection

Eligible users need to meet several conditions:

Complete KYC Level 2 verification.

Maintain a security score of at least 80.

Complete the required security verification.

Meet the account, jurisdiction and other applicable eligibility requirements.

After activation, the account enters a 30-day Security Hardening period. Protection does not apply during this period. The score must remain at 80 or above for 30 consecutive days before the status becomes Protection Active.

There is another important detail: if the security score falls below 80, protection can be suspended. A user should therefore treat the security score as an ongoing responsibility, not a one-time activation requirement.

What should users strengthen beyond passwords?

A strong password and two-factor authentication are a starting point, not a complete security strategy.

Passkeys, an authenticator app, a secured email account, anti-phishing codes, withdrawal limits and a dedicated fund password can add meaningful layers of protection. Keeping API write permissions disabled when they are not needed is another sensible precaution.

Device security matters too. Avoid installing unofficial applications, keep operating systems updated, and never share verification codes or approve login requests you did not initiate.

The fine print matters

Gate's plan is not an insurance product or an unconditional promise to repay every loss. Only qualifying incidents occurring while protection is active may be considered. Applications require evidence, compliance with the security conditions and submission within the stated deadline. Final eligibility and reimbursement decisions remain subject to the plan's terms and review.

That is why users should read the full rules before relying on this protection. An additional security layer is useful, but it cannot replace careful account management.

My Take

I see Gate Guard as a useful extra layer, particularly because phishing and device compromise remain serious risks for crypto users. But the real value depends on how clearly users understand its exclusions and maintain the required security settings.

I would rather see users build several independent security layers than depend on a single feature to protect their entire account.

Which account-security risk concerns you most: phishing, malware, SIM theft or device compromise? And beyond passwords and 2FA, what security measures do you personally use?

Not financial advice.
