#ETHDrops5.5% Ethereum just gave back a week of gains in a single session, and the damage is concentrated in one place. From the $2,424.82 close on 4 November to the $2,238 close on 5 November, ETH shed roughly 7.7%, and the intraday low of $2,206 tested a level that had held through most of October. At around $2,242 this morning, the question is no longer whether ETH is weak, but whether the $2,200 zone can hold on a closing basis.
The move in numbers
The 4 November candle opened at $2,274.75, rallied to $2,450, and closed at $2,424.82. The 5 November session opened at $2,424.82, touched $2,437 near the open, then collapsed to $2,206. It closed at $2,238.07. Today's candle, which is still open, is trading near $2,242 with a range of $2,229 to $2,250. Gate's 24-hour spot change is about -7.8%, against the -5.5% figure circulating in some reports.
The technical picture
RSI sits near 39, which is weak but not oversold. MACD is still negative, with the MACD line about -57 below its signal, so momentum has not turned. The 7-day moving average has fallen to about $2,281, and the 30-day average is near $2,389. ETH is now below both averages, a clear short-term downtrend. The 120-day average near $2,279 has just been lost, and the 200-day average sits at about $2,158, well below the current price.
Key support: $2,200 to $2,158
The first floor is the $2,206 intraday low, which is the most important level in this decline. Below it, the lower Bollinger band near $2,198 aligns with the zone. The 200-day average near $2,158 is the deeper structural support. A daily close below $2,200 would confirm a breakdown and open the way to that level. The Parabolic SAR at about $2,193 also sits in the same area, so the cluster is meaningful.
Key resistance: $2,281 to $2,343
The first ceiling is the 7-day average near $2,281, followed by the 120-day average around $2,279. The 30-minute-equivalent EMA near $2,317 and the Bollinger midline at about $2,343 form the next resistance band. Reclaiming $2,343 would signal that the sell-off has stalled. The 30-day average near $2,389 and the 4 November close at $2,425 are the levels bulls must clear to change the trend.
Derivatives and flows
Open interest fell about 6% over 24 hours, which means positions are being closed rather than added. The long-short ratio is about 1.36, with more accounts long than short, which leaves room for a squeeze if price stabilizes. Funding is slightly positive at about 0.006, so longs pay a modest premium. The taker buy/sell ratio is 0.93, meaning sellers dominated the latest window. Spot ETH ETFs have also seen net outflows, adding to the pressure.
Why ETH underperformed Bitcoin
Ethereum fell 16.1% in October, its weakest October since 2016, according to CryptoRank data cited in recent coverage. ETH had outperformed Bitcoin strongly on 4 November, rising more than 5% after the US midterm result. That bounce has now reversed. Bitcoin is also trading lower, so this is not purely an ETH-specific event, but ETH's beta to risk sentiment has been higher.
Bull case
ETH is oversold on a short-term basis, and open interest is falling, which can clear weak positions and set up a relief rally. A daily close back above $2,281, then above $2,343, would show buyers are regaining control. The 200-day average at about $2,158 is a reasonable place for dip buyers to step in.
Bear case
The bear case is straightforward. A close below $2,200 breaks the most important short-term level and opens the way to $2,158. Derivatives positioning still leans long, so a further drop could trigger liquidations. Until ETH reclaims its 7-day and 120-day averages, rallies are likely to meet supply.
My read
I see a tactical bounce risk near the $2,200 zone, but the trend is down until ETH reclaims $2,281 and $2,343 on closing prices. Patience matters more than prediction here. Watch whether the $2,206 low holds on a daily close, and whether open interest rebuilds on any rebound.
