Gate Guard Is Now Free to Activate: What Traders and Investors Need to Know
Account security is one of the most important parts of trading on any crypto platform, and many users only think about it after something has already gone wrong. Gate has now made Gate Guard available to eligible users to activate free of charge through the Gate App or Gate Web. For investors and traders who hold assets on the platform, this is worth understanding in detail, because it addresses a specific risk: direct losses caused by unauthorized transfers out of a Gate account.
The first point is the core announcement. Gate Guard is an account protection plan provided by Gate. Its main purpose is to cover direct losses that result from unauthorized transfers of assets from a user's Gate account. The announcement makes clear that the service is currently free to activate for eligible users, so there is no fee to switch it on. For someone who already holds funds on the platform, that means a layer of protection can be added without a subscription or a premium charge.
The second point is what the plan actually covers. According to the official description, the protection targets situations where account information is compromised through phishing, malware attacks, or remote control of a user's device. It also covers unauthorized access and asset transfers that follow a lost mobile phone, SIM card theft, or a fraudulent SIM replacement. These are real, common routes used by attackers. Many people focus on exchange hacks or market crashes, but a large share of individual losses come from social engineering and device compromise. A protection plan aimed at exactly these routes is therefore relevant to ordinary users, not only to large holders.
The third point is an important limitation that every user should read carefully. Gate has stated that Gate Guard is not an insurance product. It does not constitute an insurance contract, any form of insurance arrangement, or a promise of reimbursement. For unauthorized asset transfer incidents that meet the plan rules, a user may apply for reimbursement of the relevant direct losses. However, eligibility and the reimbursement amount are subject to Gate's final review. Investors should treat Gate Guard as a structured protection process with conditions, not as a guaranteed refund. Understanding this distinction avoids false expectations if an incident ever happens.
The fourth point concerns eligibility, which is the part most users need to act on right away. To qualify, a user must reach a security score of 80 or above, complete KYC 2 identity verification, complete the required security verifications, and maintain a normal account status. Users must also meet other applicable platform risk control and eligibility requirements. The security score requirement is the practical step many users will need to work on. If a score is below 80, the user should go to the Security Center and complete the relevant security settings. Once the score meets the threshold, the user can apply for activation.
For traders, the security score requirement is a useful reminder of the basic settings that matter most. Strong account protection usually depends on several habits working together: a unique login password, multi-factor authentication for login, trading, withdrawals and security changes, an anti-phishing code, withdrawal address whitelisting, and careful management of the mobile number linked to the account. Gate's own security materials describe multi-factor authentication across these stages, including SMS, Google OTP, IP address monitoring, withdrawal whitelist, security logs and fund passwords. Completing these settings is not only a route to qualifying for Gate Guard; it is also the most direct way to reduce the chance of an unauthorized transfer in the first place.
The activation process itself is straightforward. In the Gate App, users can reach the Gate Guard page from the home page through the Activate Now button or the shield icon in the Assets section, from the Assets page by tapping the shield icon next to Est. Total Value under Overview, or from the User Center under Security. On the Gate Web platform, the page can be reached from the shield icon next to Total Asset Value on the User Center or Funds Overview pages, or from the Security page. Once on the page, the user checks the security score. If it is 80 or above, they can complete activation. If not, the Boost Security Score button leads directly to the Security Center.
There is also a timing detail that investors should note. After successful activation, a 30-day Security Hardening Period applies. During this period, the security score must remain at 80 or above for 30 consecutive days. Protection takes effect once all applicable requirements have been met. This means activation is not an instant switch. Users who activate and then lower their security settings during the hardening period may delay or lose the protection. The practical takeaway is to treat the security score as an ongoing standard, not a one-time task.
From an investor's perspective, the announcement has a broader meaning. Crypto markets move quickly, and a compromised account can lead to a loss within minutes. A protection plan that is free to join lowers the cost of taking a precaution. It is not a substitute for personal vigilance, and it does not remove the need to verify links, avoid sharing verification codes, or be cautious about unexpected calls and messages. But it adds a structured safety net for the scenarios that Gate has specifically described, which include the common phone-based and device-based attacks.
For active traders, there is a second consideration. Many trading losses come from speed and emotion, but unauthorized access can compound the damage. An attacker with access to an account can move funds quickly, which is why the combination of strong authentication and a protection plan matters. Traders who rely on API keys or frequent withdrawals should also review their security practices, since the same principles of whitelisting, restricted permissions and monitoring apply. Protection plans cover some scenarios, but they cannot undo all risks, so the best approach is to combine account-level settings with disciplined habits.
Retail users and newer investors may find the eligibility conditions more demanding than expected, especially the KYC 2 requirement. Completing identity verification in advance, before an urgent need arises, can save time. Users who have not yet completed KYC 2 should check their verification status first, then work through the security score requirements. Doing this during a calm period is far better than trying to meet requirements in the middle of an incident.
Looking ahead, the key question for the community is how many eligible users will complete activation and how the reimbursement process will be experienced in practice. Those are details that will become clearer over time, and they should be judged on the official rules rather than on assumptions. What is clear from the announcement is the direction: Gate is pushing account protection from an optional feature toward a more visible, structured service that users can access without paying extra. For users who hold assets, now is a sensible time to check their security score, complete any missing verifications, and review the Gate Guard rules in full before activating.
To summarize the essentials for readers: Gate Guard is free to activate for eligible users; it covers direct losses from unauthorized transfers caused by phishing, malware, remote device control, lost phones, SIM theft and SIM replacement fraud; it is not insurance and reimbursement is subject to Gate's final review; eligibility requires a security score of 80 or above, KYC 2 verification, completed security checks and a normal account status; and after activation a 30-day Security Hardening Period applies during which the score must stay at 80 or above. Read the rules, check your score, and treat account security as part of your trading routine rather than an afterthought.#WCTCS9 #GateSocialAnnualStreamerAndCreatorAwards
