The US Midterms Could Change More Than Politics: Fiscal Policy, Tariffs and Crypto Regulation in Focus

The biggest question surrounding the US midterm elections is not simply which party gains control of Congress. It is how that political shift could influence the financial decisions that shape global markets over the next two years.

With voting taking place on November 3, investors are closely monitoring the possibility of a divided Congress. Republicans currently control both chambers, but Democrats have a strong opportunity to gain ground in the House, while the Senate contest remains more uncertain.

For financial markets, three policy areas deserve particular attention.

1. Fiscal policy and government spending

Fiscal policy could become one of the most important consequences of the election.

If Democrats gain control of one or both chambers, negotiations over federal spending, taxation, defense budgets and the debt ceiling could become more complicated. Greater congressional oversight could also make it harder for the administration to move certain spending priorities forward.

If Republicans retain control, the administration could have more room to pursue its existing legislative priorities.

However, a divided Congress does not automatically mean major spending cuts or a completely different economic direction. Government funding negotiations and borrowing requirements will remain important regardless of the outcome.

For Treasury markets, the key variables will be deficit expectations, government borrowing and bond yields.

2. Tariffs and international trade

Trade policy is another major factor for investors.

The Trump administration has relied heavily on executive authority to implement tariff measures. A change in congressional control would increase political scrutiny and potentially create additional challenges around trade policy, but it would not automatically eliminate existing tariffs.

Higher import costs can affect business margins, consumer prices and supply chains. Companies with significant international exposure may face additional uncertainty when trade conditions change.

For equities, I would pay particular attention to manufacturing, technology, retail and semiconductor companies because their earnings can be sensitive to trade costs and global supply chains.

The broader impact will depend on how tariff policy develops and whether businesses can pass higher costs on to consumers.

3. Crypto regulation and institutional adoption

The cryptocurrency industry has another important issue to watch.

The proposed CLARITY Act, designed to establish a clearer regulatory framework for digital assets, failed to advance in the US Senate on September 15. It received 50 votes in favor and 49 against, falling short of the 60 votes required to proceed.

This leaves regulatory clarity as an important issue for the next Congress.

A Republican-controlled Congress could provide a different legislative environment for the administration's crypto agenda. A Democratic-controlled chamber could bring greater scrutiny of digital-asset businesses, financial institutions and regulatory appointments.

For Bitcoin, Ethereum and the wider crypto market, the long-term significance is institutional participation, clearer rules and the ability of businesses to operate under more predictable regulatory conditions.

I would watch progress on market-structure legislation, SEC and CFTC oversight, stablecoin regulation and digital-asset taxation.

How could the three major asset classes react

US Stocks

Equities could experience short-term volatility as investors adjust expectations around fiscal spending, corporate regulation and trade policy.

Technology and AI-related companies deserve special attention because congressional oversight of data centers, energy consumption and infrastructure investment could influence future investment conditions.

However, earnings growth, interest rates and actual business performance should remain more important than political headlines alone.

Gold

Gold could attract additional safe-haven demand if political uncertainty increases concerns about government finances, inflation or geopolitical stability.

However, gold is not guaranteed to rise following a Democratic or Republican victory. Real Treasury yields, the US dollar and central-bank expectations will remain important drivers.

Bitcoin and Crypto

Crypto could react to changes in regulatory expectations and institutional sentiment.

Progress toward clearer legislation could improve confidence in the industry's long-term operating environment. Delays or increased regulatory uncertainty could create pressure on sentiment.

Nevertheless, Bitcoin's direction will also depend on liquidity, ETF flows, leverage, interest-rate expectations and broader risk appetite.

My Market Strategy

I would avoid treating the election result as an automatic buy or sell signal.

My focus would be on how markets confirm the political developments:

- S&P 500 and Nasdaq for equity-market direction.
- US Treasury yields and the Dollar Index for macroeconomic pressure.
- Gold for changes in safe-haven demand.
- BTC and ETH for liquidity and risk appetite.
- Trading volume and volatility to distinguish a genuine breakout from a temporary headline-driven move.

The most important distinction is between political announcements and policies that actually become law.

The election may change the balance of power in Washington, but the economic consequences will depend on implementation, negotiations and the response of businesses and investors.

My biggest focus is fiscal policy and the US debt outlook. Government borrowing, Treasury yields and the dollar influence almost every major asset class. Tariffs and crypto regulation are also important, but the broader liquidity environment can determine how strongly these developments affect financial markets.

For now, capital preservation, patience and confirmation from price action matter more than taking positions based on political expectations.

The impact of this midterm election on crypto regulation is definitely worth watching. It’s a shame the CLARITY Act didn’t pass; hopefully the new Congress can advance clearer rules

Don't rush to bet; wait for the policy to take effect and then see how the market reacts. It's all noise right now
