Geopolitical Risk Premium and Short-Term Price Action 👀

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that two oil tankers, which had been using an "unauthorized" route in the Strait of Hormuz, struck naval mines and exploded. Amid reports that the U.S. is weighing military options, the resulting rise in the risk premium dampened risk appetite, contributing to a 0.63% decline in Bitcoin over a 15-minute window; the price of BTC retreated from $78,064 to the $77,300 level. There is no evidence of large-scale capital outflows driving this decline; rather, it reflects a cautious stance triggered by geopolitical uncertainty.

Divergence in Commodity and Bond Markets

Oil and gold moved in opposite directions during this period: Brent crude fell by more than 3%, while gold recovered by approximately 0.7% from a one-year low. Meanwhile, a slight pullback in bond yields and the U.S. Dollar Index serves, in theory, to alleviate pressure from inflation and interest rates. However, following the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates unchanged, uncertainty regarding the future policy path persists; differing views on the possibility of a rate hike in December make it difficult to discern a clear, singular direction.

Institutional Acquisitions and Treasury Holdings

On the institutional front, Strategy and Strive purchased a combined total of 934 BTC (approximately $72.6 million) last week. Strategy acquired 811 BTC, bringing its total holdings to 849,327 BTC, while Strive added 124 BTC, reaching a total of 43,124 BTC. The State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio has increased its indirect exposure to Bitcoin by 83% through its holdings in MSTR (MicroStrategy) shares. Such institutional flows demonstrate that, regardless of short-term price fluctuations, Bitcoin continues to maintain its place on institutional balance sheets.

Macro Calendar and Election Uncertainty

As the U.S. midterm elections approach, rising gasoline prices—reaching record levels ahead of the vote—are pushing inflation expectations higher. Prediction markets indicate an increased probability of the Democrats securing control of both chambers of Congress; this serves as a key variable that could influence the pace of future cryptocurrency policy. It is only natural to expect continued volatility in macro risk appetite until the election results are finalized.

Security Update: BTCPay Server Alert

Meanwhile, the open-source Bitcoin payment processor BTCPay Server has reported unauthorized transfers from "hot wallets" in certain instances, advising operators to shut down their systems until an investigation is concluded. The inquiry revealed that the attack vector targets versions 2.4.1 and earlier (released on July 23, 2026), while there are no credible reports of hot wallet drains affecting the latest version, 2.4.7. This development is significant regarding security standards—particularly for businesses practicing self-custody—though its impact on Bitcoin’s broader price structure appears limited.

Bitcoin’s movement around the $77,000 level presents a complex, multi-layered picture that cannot be attributed to any single factor. While geopolitical risks increase short-term volatility, institutional buying emerges as a source of medium-term support. The Federal Reserve’s December decision and the election results stand out as key variables that will shape the macroeconomic landscape. In this context, waiting for greater clarity in the flow of data—and acting in alignment with your own risk tolerance—can help you maintain a more disciplined approach during periods of market turbulence.

Short-term volatility depends on geopolitics, medium-term support comes from institutions, while the long term still depends on the Fed and election results
