Oracle gained 10.73% to $144.54 on October 28, Microsoft rose about 4% after hours, and Alphabet fell 12.6% on October 29, its worst day ever. One correction to the usual framing: Oracle's jump came at its Investor Day, not an earnings report. The three reactions show one shift. The market stopped paying for AI spending itself and started asking when capex peaks, when free cash flow turns positive and how much outside money a company still needs.

Oracle gave dates and numbers. Capex peaks in fiscal 2027 and 2028, after $90 billion to $95 billion this year versus $55.7 billion last year. Free cash flow turns positive in the second half of fiscal 2028 and reaches at least $30 billion in fiscal 2029, a year investors had expected it to stay negative. New capital-market funding is capped at $20 billion through fiscal 2030, split between $10 billion of equity and $10 billion of debt, on top of a $20 billion share program already finished. Oracle also set a fiscal 2030 revenue goal of at least $225 billion, from $67.4 billion in fiscal 2026, a compound growth rate above 35%. The stock added more than $40 billion in a day, its best session since May.

Alphabet's Google Cloud grew 103% to $30.71 billion, yet free cash flow was negative $9.07 billion, following negative $5.9 billion the quarter before, two straight negative quarters. Capex was $51.4 billion, up 114%, 2026 guidance is $195 billion to $205 billion with a significant increase expected in 2027, and EPS missed at $2.12 against $3.02. There is also the $80 billion equity raise announced in June. Strong growth did not matter because the market could not see where the cash turns. The stock fell another 1.4% on Friday, about 13.8% over two days.

Microsoft reported free cash flow of $18.6 billion despite $45.2 billion of capex, and its Azure growth of 48% came with a clear 49% to 50% guide. It then priced $25 billion of bonds, its first since 2017, and the post-earnings pop faded to a flat close of $530.14. Positive cash flow earned it a better reaction than Alphabet, but not immunity, since external funding is now part of the story.

Oracle's rally did not last. It fell 3.5% to $139.56 on Thursday and another 6.37% to $130.67 on Friday, almost exactly where it started before the Investor Day at $130.53. Nasdaq fell 2.86%, the Nasdaq-100 about 3.5%, and the index had its worst month since March 2025. Intel plunged 28.6% and said it did not expect to generate positive cash flow this year, and Amazon, with capex near $220 billion and free cash flow reported at negative $42.4 billion, also fell. A report cited Goldman Sachs' chief economist warning that growth in mega-scale data-center AI investment is expected to peak within weeks. Five companies, Meta, Alphabet, Oracle, Amazon and Microsoft, have committed about $800 billion to AI spending in 2026.

Resistance: $139.56 (+6.8%), the 50-day average near $142.04 (+8.7%), $144.54 (+10.6%) and the 200-day average near $157.56 (+20.6%).
Support: Friday's low of $129.00 (-1.3%), then the 52-week low near $115 (-12.0%).
A stock back at its pre-announcement price shows how little a plan can do when the sector is selling. Analysts still average a target near $236, but one analyst note says the thesis breaks if Oracle raises more than its $20 billion cap or falls toward $115.

First, when does capex peak, and does management put a date on it? Second, when does free cash flow turn positive, and by how much? Third, how much external financing is needed, and is there a cap? Oracle answered all three, Microsoft two of three, and Alphabet none cleanly. Oracle's first checkpoint is the fiscal 2028 turn, and quarterly free cash flow has to improve from negative $5.4 billion.
Investors rewarded discipline and punished open-ended spending, but one good day cannot fix a sector-wide doubt. The real signals ahead are capex guidance, quarterly free cash flow and any new financing. Until those arrive, AI-to-cash conversion is the metric that decides who is rewarded.
