My view: the AI rally will increasingly depend on proof of monetization, not simply proof of demand.
Microsoft and Google are central to this debate because their earnings can reveal whether AI investment is generating incremental revenue fast enough to justify enormous infrastructure spending.
I would separate the question into three parts:
1. Are Azure and Google Cloud accelerating because of AI workloads?
2. Are customers paying for AI services, or is demand still primarily reflected in infrastructure commitments?
3. Are rising capital expenditures translating into higher operating income, free cash flow, and sustainable margins?
The third question is particularly important. Strong cloud growth can support elevated valuations, but it does not automatically mean the returns on AI investment are attractive.
What the October 28 results actually revealed
The reports are now available, and they show two different sides of the AI investment story.
Microsoft
+48%
Azure revenue growth
$92.3B
Total quarterly revenue, +19%
$45.2B
Quarterly capital expenditure
$36.6B
Net income, +32%
Microsoft's commercial remaining performance obligations also increased 73% to $677 billion, indicating substantial contracted future business. However, investors still need to see how efficiently that demand converts into cash generation.
Alphabet (Google)
+103%
Google Cloud revenue growth
$127.6B
Total quarterly revenue, +25%
-$9.1B
Free cash flow
$51.4B
Quarterly capital expenditure
Google Cloud delivered exceptional growth, but Alphabet's revenue missed expectations slightly, and negative free cash flow raised questions about the cost of expansion. Management also expects significantly higher capital expenditure in 2027.
Can these results sustain the AI rally?
My assessment is that they provide evidence of real AI demand, but not yet a blanket justification for every AI-related valuation.
Three developments matter:
- Azure and Google Cloud growth demonstrate that enterprise AI infrastructure demand is translating into substantial commercial revenue.
- Capital expenditure is growing enormously, and depreciation, electricity, data-center operating costs and financing requirements will increasingly matter.
- Investors need evidence that AI improves margins and free cash flow, not just revenue and customer adoption.
Alphabet's reaction illustrates this tension particularly clearly: exceptional cloud growth was not enough to prevent a sharp share-price decline after its results.
Which metric deserves more attention?
I would prioritize the following:
Cloud revenue growth Measures AI infrastructure demand
AI revenue contribution Measures actual monetization
Free cash flow Measures financial sustainability
Return on invested capital Measures investment efficiency
CapEx growth versus revenue growth Measures spending discipline
My preference is to focus more on the speed of investment payback. Business growth is essential, but eventually the market will demand evidence that AI infrastructure produces attractive returns.
This is also important for the broader semiconductor industry. Continued hyperscaler investment supports demand for GPUs, HBM, advanced DRAM and NAND. However, if returns disappoint, future infrastructure budgets could be reassessed.

Market Analysis: Fed Policy, Tech Earnings, and Strategy Adjustments
Following the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates steady and the recent earnings reports from major tech companies, here are direct answers to the current market discussion points:
1. What financial metrics does the market currently value most: revenue growth, profitability, or AI investments?
The market is currently prioritizing revenue growth connected to Artificial Intelligence, combined with clear indicators of future profitability. The different reactions to Microsoft and Google demonstrate this. Microsoft's 48% Azure growth satisfied investors, leading to a stock increase. Conversely, Google's 103% cloud growth was substantial, but the drop in Alphabet shares suggests the market is concerned about the high capital expenditures required for AI development and the timeline for returns. Pure AI investment without immediate monetization is currently being penalized.
2. Following the reports from Microsoft and Google, will Amazon's upcoming data meet expectations?
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is expected to report high revenue growth, similar to its competitors, as demand for cloud and AI infrastructure remains high. However, investor focus will likely be on Amazon's profit margins and capital expenditure. If AWS shows strong growth but indicates high spending on AI infrastructure, the market reaction may be mixed, similar to Alphabet's. Meeting expectations will require a balance between high growth and controlled expenses.
3. Given the Fed's decision and these earnings results, will you adjust your current trading strategy?
Yes, adjustments are necessary.
· Crypto (BTC/ETH): Since rates remain unchanged and markets expected this, there is no immediate macroeconomic change. I will maintain current positions but monitor the upcoming Fed press conference for any future policy signals that could impact the current trading range.
· Equities: I will focus on companies demonstrating actual revenue realization from AI rather than just announcing future investments. I will avoid overexposure to tech stocks with high capital expenditures until their profitability metrics stabilize.
The data shows that the market is currently evaluating companies based on their financial efficiency rather than just revenue expansion.
