The final trading week of October closed with a clear signal from the bond market that overshadowed the Federal Reserve's decision to hold rates steady. St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem stated on Friday that additional monetary policy firming will be necessary, and soon. Following these remarks, futures markets priced a roughly 76 percent probability of a quarter point rate increase at the December 8 to 9 meeting.

The Mechanics of the December Pricing

Musalem is not a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee this year, but his comments carry weight because they align with the committee's internal debate. At the October 28 meeting, the Fed kept the target range at 3.75 to 4.00 percent in a 10 to 2 vote. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack both dissented in favor of a quarter point increase. Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan voted to hold but has since stated that the FOMC needs at least two more 25 basis point increases to control inflation.

For a majority, seven votes are required. The core of the committee appears to be moving toward further tightening, even as Chair Kevin Warsh declined to offer specific guidance for December during his press conference.

The Bond Market Has Already Repriced

The two year Treasury yield, which is highly sensitive to Fed policy expectations, closed the week near 4.61 percent, having come down from 4.89 percent a month earlier. This level sits well above the current policy rate ceiling of 4.00 percent, indicating that the bond market is already pricing in multiple hikes over the coming months. The yield curve shows the market expects tighter financial conditions ahead, regardless of the exact timing.

Implications for Risk Assets

For digital assets, this environment presents a challenging backdrop. Bitcoin traded near 77,350 dollars on Friday, having failed to hold above the 80,000 dollar level. The prospect of higher real yields increases the opportunity cost of holding non yielding assets. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded significant outflows during the week, reflecting a shift in risk appetite as investors adjust to the possibility of a December hike.

Markets are watching the upcoming employment and inflation reports for confirmation. If price pressures remain firm, the case for a December move strengthens. If economic data softens, the committee may face a more difficult choice. I am holding my positions and watching the market. Which signal matters more to you here, the Fed guidance or the incoming data. This is not financial advice.

BTC fails to break 80k; ETF outflows. Non-yielding assets are naturally at a disadvantage in an environment of rising real yields—the same old script

Musalem isn't a voting member, but the mood has shifted; Cook and Hammack dissented outright, and seven votes are enough to pass, with the inner circle clearly moving toward tightening
