The largest technology companies are spending nearly 750 billion dollars on artificial intelligence this year, but the businesses funding that spending are slowing down. Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are all increasing their infrastructure budgets at a time when their traditional revenue engines are showing clear signs of fatigue.
The Two-Speed Reality
Alphabet reported search and other advertising revenue of 63.35 billion dollars for the third quarter of 2026, a 12 percent increase from a year earlier. That growth rate is down from 19 percent in the first quarter and 17 percent in the second quarter, marking the slowest pace in five quarters. Google says query growth was actually the strongest in five years, which points to a simple problem: it is generating more searches but earning less money per search. On the earnings call, the company confirmed that lower monetization within AI Mode was one reason for the slowdown.
Amazon faces a similar story. Advertising services revenue rose 11 percent to 19.6 billion dollars, the slowest growth since the company began reporting that segment separately in 2022. Online stores sales grew just 2 percent, a level not seen in more than three years. Amazon still plans to spend roughly 220 billion dollars on capital expenditures this year, while Alphabet maintains a spending outlook of up to 205 billion dollars.
What This Means ?
A tokenized equity product that tracks Intel on Gate fell nearly 30 percent this week after the company issued weak guidance. The broader semiconductor space also sold off. These moves show how quickly sentiment can shift when spending commitments collide with weakening core results.
Markets are watching whether AI investments begin to generate clearer returns. If search and retail growth stabilize while infrastructure spending stays disciplined, the tension may ease. If the core businesses keep slowing while capital expenditures rise, pressure may persist. Both directions remain possible.
What signal matters more to you here, the spending plans or the slowdown in core revenue. I am holding my positions and watching the market. This is not financial advice.
