Google Cloud Surges 103% But Stock Falls - Why Wall Street Hit Sell

Alphabet posted Q3 revenue of 127.6 billion USD, up 25% year over year. Google Cloud was the star. Cloud revenue hit 30.7 billion USD, up 103% from 15.2 billion USD a year ago, beating Street view near 29.1 billion USD. Cloud operating income more than tripled to 11.1 billion USD, up 209% year over year. Growth sped up from 82% in Q2, the fastest clip ever for a major hyperscaler.

Yet shares fell hard. Stock dropped 9.8% to 13% after hours, near 292 USD versus close 324.89 USD. Market cap loss was about 482 billion USD in a single day, the worst drop in company history.

Why the disconnect?

EPS miss, not Cloud
Diluted EPS was 2.12 USD versus Street view of 3.02 USD, down 26% from 2.87 USD a year ago. GAAP print was hit by an 8.7 billion USD loss on equity holdings, cutting about 0.55 USD off EPS. Even without that loss, core EPS still missed. Search and ads grew slower than hoped, raising worry that AI spend has not yet lifted ad yield.

Capex and cash flow shock
Alphabet disclosed record capex for AI infra, more in one quarter than many Fortune 100 firms earn in a year. Free cash flow fell to minus 9.1 billion USD. Investors who cheer cloud growth still ask how fast heavy build will turn into real cash. When cash flow turns negative while profit stays high, valuation gets re rated.

Cloud quality is real, but priced
Cloud growth is organic and mix is improving. More of the gain comes from AI workloads and enterprise deals, not one off. Still, market had priced 89% growth. Beat was clear, but not enough to offset EPS miss and cash burn. Traders sold first, asked later.

What to watch
• Cloud backlog and margin trend: Operating income tripling shows scale. If margin holds above 35%, Cloud can carry group profit.
• Search resilience: If search revenue holds double digit growth, ad fear eases.
• Capex path: If spend peaks in next 2 quarters, free cash flow recovers and stock can rebuild base.
• Cost of AI: Watch server cost per unit of Cloud revenue.
Trader take: This is classic growth vs profit clash. Cloud at 103% is elite. Stock fall is about profit quality and cash. For long term holders, dip near 290 USD is where prior support sat. For short term, wait for EPS to stabilize and cash flow to turn back to positive before adding size. The story is still intact, but market wants proof that Cloud surge turns into cash, not just top line.
