My view: the market gives the highest grade to profitable growth, not growth alone. In the AI race, revenue growth attracts attention, but investors ultimately want evidence that enormous AI investments will generate sustainable earnings and free cash flow.

The Microsoft–Google divergence illustrates an important point: Wall Street doesn’t simply reward the biggest growth percentage. It evaluates expectations, valuation, margins, capital expenditure and future guidance.

1. What deserves the highest grade?

I’d rank the three factors this way:

Factor Importance What investors want
Profitability Very high Strong margins and free cash flow
Revenue growth Very high Sustainable demand and market share
AI investment High, conditional Measurable future returns

My preferred combination is growth + profitability.

AI investment is a competitive advantage only if it eventually produces better economics. Spending billions on infrastructure without sufficient customer demand can become a serious valuation risk.

2. Why Microsoft won and Alphabet lost

Microsoft — strongest report-card performance

* Azure growth: 48%.
* Revenue: $92.28 billion, up 20%.
* Free cash flow: $18.6 billion.
* Azure next-quarter growth guidance: 49–50%.

The important point is that Microsoft demonstrated strong AI demand while maintaining substantial cash generation. Reuters

Alphabet — impressive growth, disappointing overall results

* Google Cloud growth: 103%.
* Cloud revenue: $30.7 billion.
* Free cash flow: negative $9.1 billion.
* Earnings per share: $2.12 versus approximately $3.02 expected.

The market was concerned about disappointing search revenue, the earnings miss and the cost of AI infrastructure.

The lesson: a spectacular growth number cannot compensate for every weakness elsewhere in a company’s results.

3. Has Amazon got a surprise?

Interestingly, we already have an answer: Amazon released its third-quarter results on October 29.

Strong AWS growth

* AWS revenue grew 39.3%, its fastest growth in nearly five years.

* AWS reached an annualized revenue run rate of approximately $184 billion.

* Operating income reached $28.1 billion.

* Operating margin hit a record 13.9%. Amazon Announces Third Quarter Results

That’s an impressive report. However, Amazon’s substantial AI infrastructure spending means investors will also scrutinize free cash flow and future capital expenditure.

My interpretation: Amazon has demonstrated that it is a serious AI infrastructure competitor. But strong AWS growth doesn’t automatically mean the stock is cheap or that its investment spending will generate attractive returns.

The biggest caution is cash flow: Amazon reported a trailing-12-month free cash flow outflow of $42.4 billion, driven largely by AI-related infrastructure spending. It expects approximately $220 billion in cash capital expenditure for 2026. Amazon Announces Third Quarter Results

That creates a fascinating contrast:

* Microsoft: high growth with positive free cash flow.

* Alphabet: exceptional cloud growth, but earnings and cash-flow concerns.

* Amazon: accelerating AWS growth, record operating margin, but enormous infrastructure spending.

4. What does the Fed decision mean?

The Fed held interest rates at 3.75%–4.00% on October 28. However, inflation remains elevated, and two policymakers preferred an immediate rate increase. Federal Reserve issues FOMC statement

For technology stocks, this means:

* Higher borrowing costs can pressure expensive growth-stock valuations.

* AI infrastructure investment becomes more expensive.

* Companies with strong cash generation have an advantage.

* A rate pause is not automatically a bullish signal.

5. Would I change my investment strategy?

I would make a small adjustment, not a dramatic portfolio change.

My approach would be:

* Avoid chasing earnings rallies. Excellent results can already be priced into a stock.

* Prioritize cash flow. Look for evidence that AI spending is translating into operating income.

* Keep some cash available. Market volatility can create better entry opportunities.

* Diversify AI exposure. Don’t assume every AI-related company will be a winner.

* Wait for confirmation. Look at the next quarter’s guidance and spending returns before increasing exposure.

Given your previously expressed balanced, wait-for-confirmation approach, I would favor patience over aggressively buying these earnings reactions.

6. My final report card

Microsoft

Growth + cash generation

A

Amazon

AWS acceleration + investment risk

A−

Alphabet

Excellent cloud growth, weaker overall earnings

B−

My qualitative assessment of these quarterly results, not a stock-price or valuation rating.

The biggest investment lesson: AI growth is exciting, but cash flow is proof that the business model works.
