Alphabet reported third quarter revenue of 127.6 billion dollars, up 25 percent from a year earlier. Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to 30.7 billion dollars, a 103 percent increase. Cloud operating income rose to 11.1 billion dollars from 3.6 billion dollars a year earlier. Despite this, Alphabet shares fell about 8 percent in after hours trading.
Net income fell 25 percent to 26.2 billion dollars. Earnings per share came in at 2.12 dollars, below analyst expectations near 3.00 dollars. The company recorded an 8.7 billion dollar loss on equity investments, which reduced earnings per share by 0.55 dollars. Capital expenditures reached 51.4 billion dollars, more than double the 24 billion dollars spent a year earlier. Free cash flow turned negative at 9.1 billion dollars.
For you, this shows the tension between growth and spending. Cloud demand is strong, but building the infrastructure to support it requires enormous investment. That spending weighs on cash flow and profit in the near term.
Markets are watching whether this investment cycle can deliver sustainable cash returns. Analysts note that heavy spending across large technology companies has become a central concern. If cloud growth continues and spending moderates, sentiment may improve. If costs keep rising faster than revenue, pressure may remain. Both directions are possible.
What matters more to you here, the cloud growth or the negative free cash flow.
