This performance was driven by strong demand for high bandwidth memory, known as HBM. HBM is a specialized type of memory that sits next to artificial intelligence processors and moves data extremely fast. The company began full scale mass production of its sixth generation HBM4 chips in the third quarter. SK Hynix expects HBM4 to become its main product in the fourth quarter, surpassing the previous generation in both shipment volume and revenue.
For investors, the most important detail is visibility. The company said its DRAM and HBM production capacity through 2029 is already sold out. It has secured long term agreements covering more than 50 percent of its 2027 and 2028 output. This structure reflects market conditions and aims to ensure stable profitability. The company also announced a shareholder return program of about 100 trillion won for this year.
However, you should also weigh the risks. Memory chips are historically cyclical. The danger is that high margins eventually attract new supply. Analysts at RBC expect the current upcycle to last about five more quarters and see HBM prices rising 80 to 100 percent in 2027. Others point to competition from Samsung and potential capacity additions. The stock trades at a low forward earnings multiple, which suggests the market is already pricing in a possible peak.
Markets are watching whether the long term agreements can stretch this cycle beyond the usual memory clock. If AI infrastructure spending continues to grow, demand may stay strong. If new supply arrives faster than expected, pricing could come under pressure. Both directions remain possible.
Which signal matters more to you here, the long term contracts or the cyclical risk. I am holding my positions and watching the market. This is not financial advice.
