#SKHynixSurgesAfterQ3 #Gate广场万圣节 Record KRW 104.6 Trillion Revenue, 80% Operating Margin and a KRW 100 Trillion Shareholder Return Plan
SK hynix’s October 28 earnings report delivered more than a headline-breaking revenue number. It showed how powerful the current AI memory cycle has become, how traditional memory pricing is adding to profitability, and how management is trying to translate extraordinary earnings into shareholder value.
At the time of the reported market snapshot, SK hynix (000660.KS) was trading around KRW 1,461,000, up 8.9%. The rally makes sense when the results are examined together: record revenue, an operating profit that exceeded market expectations, an ambitious capital-return programme and stronger visibility into future demand.
But the most important question is not whether the company can report another record quarter. It is whether these exceptional margins can remain sustainable as competitors expand capacity and memory prices eventually move through their next cycle.
**The earnings surprise was much bigger than a round-number milestone.**
For Q3 2026, SK hynix reported revenue of KRW 104.6155 trillion, operating profit of KRW 83.3338 trillion and net profit of KRW 39.7756 trillion. Revenue rose approximately 32% quarter over quarter and 328% year over year. Operating profit increased around 38% from Q2 and more than sixfold from a year earlier.
The operating margin reached approximately 80%, compared with 76% in Q2 and 47% in Q3 2025.
Market estimates for operating profit had been around KRW 76–77.5 trillion. The reported result therefore exceeded expectations by roughly KRW 6–7 trillion, depending on the consensus benchmark used.
That is the first major reason behind the stock's reaction. Investors were not simply celebrating a revenue threshold; they were reassessing how much profit SK hynix could generate from each additional unit of memory sold.
**Traditional DRAM and NAND are part of the story, not just HBM.**
High-bandwidth memory remains central to AI infrastructure, but the earnings picture is broader. SK hynix highlighted stronger sales of server DDR5, the expansion of HBM4 shipments and increased sales of 321-layer TLC enterprise SSDs.
This matters because AI infrastructure requires more than accelerators. Servers need memory, data centres need storage, and the entire system depends on efficient movement and processing of data.
When conventional DRAM and NAND prices rise alongside demand for premium HBM products, multiple parts of the memory business can contribute to earnings growth. That helps explain why the company’s profitability has been so strong.
Industry forecasts have pointed to further contract-price increases in Q4, including projected gains of 10%–15% for conventional DRAM and 15%–20% for NAND. These are forecasts, not guaranteed outcomes. The pace of price increases, customer demand and supply availability will determine whether the additional support continues.
My takeaway is that SK hynix’s earnings strength currently rests on a combination of AI-specific demand and a broader memory pricing upcycle. That is more powerful than a story dependent on one product category alone, but it also means the company remains exposed to the memory cycle.
**KRW 100 trillion in shareholder returns changes the investment conversation.**
SK hynix announced a shareholder-return programme worth approximately KRW 100 trillion for fiscal 2026. The plan includes at least KRW 30 trillion in cash dividends and at least KRW 60 trillion in share repurchases and cancellations, including the KRW 40 trillion buyback programme announced in August.
The company said that the August buyback had been completed and the shares would be cancelled shortly. It also approved a Q3 dividend of KRW 20,000 per share, comprising a KRW 10,000 performance-linked dividend and a KRW 10,000 special dividend associated with gains from its Kioxia investment.
This is significant because capital returns can influence how investors value a company’s cash generation. A company producing exceptional profits has more options: expand capacity, strengthen its balance sheet or return capital to shareholders.
However, the headline KRW 100 trillion figure should not be interpreted as a recurring annual payout that is guaranteed at the same level. Future distributions will depend on operating performance, investment requirements and realised gains.
**The Solidigm decision removes one uncertainty, but not every concern.**
SK hynix has also discontinued its review of a potential Solidigm IPO. The proposal had raised concerns about a separate listing, possible dilution and how value would be divided between the subsidiary and existing shareholders.
Halting the review removes the immediate uncertainty surrounding that transaction. It does not remove the need to finance Solidigm’s expansion or guarantee that the market will assign a higher valuation to SK hynix.
The company still needs capacity to meet rising AI-related memory demand. The eventual funding strategy and its effect on consolidated cash flow remain important issues for investors.
**HBM4 and long-term agreements provide a longer-term signal.**
SK hynix expects HBM4 to become its mainstream HBM product in Q4, with shipments and revenue from the new generation surpassing HBM3E. The company is also working to ramp up M15X production capacity by year-end.
The transition matters because leadership in a new memory generation can support product mix and pricing power. Yet early momentum does not guarantee permanent market dominance. Samsung and Micron remain serious competitors, and their yields, capacity expansion and customer qualifications could alter the competitive balance.
Another important development is demand visibility. SK hynix says long-term agreements with 14 major customers cover more than 50% of its production capacity for 2027 and 2028. It has also described its DRAM and HBM capacity through 2029 as effectively sold out.
These agreements can improve planning and reduce uncertainty around future volumes. Their actual value, however, will depend on contractual pricing, customer requirements and how market prices evolve during the agreement period.
**The risks are just as important as the record numbers.**
An operating margin near 80% is extraordinary. Maintaining it is a different challenge. If DRAM and NAND price increases slow, competitors add capacity faster than expected, or AI infrastructure spending weakens, incremental profit growth could moderate.
HBM4 competition deserves particular attention. SK hynix’s current product position is a strength, but investors should monitor actual shipments, customer adoption and competitor progress rather than assume today's market share will remain unchanged.
Capital allocation is another balancing act. Shareholder returns can support confidence, but future infrastructure investment will remain necessary to serve demand. The best outcome would combine competitive investment, disciplined spending and sustainable cash generation.
**What I will watch after this earnings report**
The next signals are the pace of conventional DRAM and NAND price increases, the commercial contribution from HBM4, the execution of long-term supply agreements and the balance between future capital expenditure and shareholder returns.
I will also watch whether the share price can sustain its post-earnings strength after the initial reaction. A sharp rally shows that expectations have changed; it does not, by itself, prove that the stock is fairly valued at every higher price.
My conclusion is that SK hynix has delivered an exceptional quarter, supported by AI memory demand, stronger pricing across its product portfolio and a substantial commitment to returning capital. The market is rewarding both the earnings surprise and greater confidence in future demand.
The next phase will be harder: protecting margins, defending HBM leadership and converting this extraordinary cycle into durable value for shareholders.
#Gate广场万圣节 {currencycard:futures}(SKHYNIX_USDT) Record Profits, ₩100 Trillion in Shareholder Returns and HBM4. Can SK Hynix Keep Its Edge Through 2030?
SK Hynix reported Q3 on October 28 and quarterly revenue crossed ₩100 trillion for the first time, at ₩104.62 trillion, about $73 to $79 billion depending on the exchange rate used. That is up 327.9% year over year and 31.9% from Q2. Shares jumped nearly 8% to ₩1,446,000 in Seoul, the KOSPI topped 5,800, and the US-listed ADR (SKHY), near $1,099.44, rose 4% in after-hours trade.
Profitability: an 80% operating margin
Operating profit was ₩83.33 trillion, up 632% year over year and 38% on the quarter. The margin reached 79.7%, versus 76% in Q2 and 47% a year ago. Net profit was ₩39.78 trillion, a 38% margin, down 58% from Q2's ₩93.92 trillion, so operating profit is the cleaner read. Results beat LSEG estimates of ₩98.34 trillion in revenue and ₩76.72 trillion in operating profit by 6.4% and 8.6%. Growth came from server DDR5, the start of HBM4 shipments and 321-layer enterprise SSDs.
The chart after the gap
From Monday's close near ₩1.28 million, the stock is up about 13%. Tuesday's intraday high of ₩1,363,000 (5.7% below the ₩1,446,000 print) and the implied prior close near ₩1,339,000 (7.4% below) are the levels to watch. Holding above them on strong volume would confirm the gap. Falling back below ₩1,339,000 would suggest the beat was already priced in.
The ₩100 trillion shareholder-return plan
For 2026, SK Hynix plans about ₩100 trillion: at least ₩30 trillion in cash dividends and at least ₩60 trillion in buybacks and cancellations, including the ₩40 trillion announced in August, which was completed last week. The board approved a Q3 dividend of ₩14 trillion and a new ₩20 trillion buyback. Of that, ₩10 trillion will be cancelled and ₩10 trillion goes to employee compensation, outside the return total. The Q3 dividend is ₩20,000 per share, ₩10,000 from earnings and ₩10,000 special from Kioxia gains, about 1.4% of today's price in one quarter. The policy: return 50% or more of free cash flow, with special dividends for investment gains and buybacks every quarter.
Financial strength versus capex
Cash reached ₩114.5 trillion, up ₩26.5 trillion, while borrowings fell ₩2.8 trillion to ₩15.8 trillion, leaving net cash of ₩98.7 trillion. The full return plan equals roughly 1.2 quarters of current operating profit, so it is affordable. The test is next year: investment is set to rise significantly as Yongin Phase 1 enters full-scale operation, though management says it will adjust timing and scale flexibly. SK Hynix also discontinued its Solidigm IPO review, citing financial market conditions, which removes one outside source of capex funding.
HBM4 transition
HBM4 shipments began in earnest, and SK Hynix expects HBM4 to surpass HBM3E in both shipment volume and revenue in Q4 and become the mainstream product. It will ramp the M15X fab to maximum capacity by year-end to support that.
Demand visibility: long-term agreements
SK Hynix has signed long-term agreements with 14 major customers, including leading cloud providers, covering more than 50% of 2027 and 2028 production capacity. Terms typically run five years, with a mechanism that adjusts to market conditions within an agreed price range. That stabilizes profitability but also bounds the upside if prices keep rising.
Shortage through 2030, and capacity
Management expects demand to exceed supply through 2030, citing the technical difficulty of leading-edge processes and long fab lead times, with AI spending broadening from a few companies to enterprises and governments. Capacity plans include a larger share of 10nm-class 1c DRAM, more DDR5 and LPDDR5 SOCAMM for AI servers, and 321-layer NAND above half of domestic NAND capacity in Q4.
Competition and market share
Nvidia's CEO said in June that Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron all passed HBM4 qualification for the Vera Rubin platform. Supply-chain estimates give SK Hynix 60% to 70% of that volume, Samsung 25% to 30% and Micron the rest. IDC puts SK Hynix's HBM revenue share at 63.2% for 2025 and 56.4% in Q1 2026, and Counterpoint shows it slipping from 58% to 50% by Q2. Samsung reports on October 29. SK Hynix still leads, but its lead is narrowing as the market grows.
**Bullish scenario:** AI infrastructure spending continues, HBM4 adoption widens and supply stays tight, keeping margins near 80%.
**Bearish scenario:** Samsung and Micron close the gap, AI investment slows or memory prices fall, and a valuation built on peak margins compresses despite record earnings.
The central question
Long-term contracts, net cash and a first-mover HBM position point to a real competitive advantage. The risk is that an 80% margin is a peak that rivals and cycles tend to erode. The next proof points are Samsung's results, Q4 HBM4 volumes and whether 2027 capex stays disciplined. @Gate_Square
