SK hynix’s record quarter reveals the real engine behind the AI boom: memory is becoming a strategic bottleneck.

The AI industry is no longer competing on computing power alone. Behind every expanding data center is a growing need for high-bandwidth memory, advanced DRAM and high-capacity storage. SK hynix’s latest results show how rapidly that demand is translating into financial performance, while raising an important question about how sustainable this growth will be.

For the third quarter of 2026, SK hynix reported revenue of KRW 104.62 trillion, its first quarter above KRW 100 trillion. Revenue increased 32% from the previous quarter and approximately 328% year over year. Operating profit reached KRW 83.33 trillion, with an operating margin of around 80%. These figures demonstrate extraordinary pricing power, strong demand and the growing value of advanced memory products.

HBM4 is becoming the next major growth driver. Full-scale production and shipments began during the third quarter, and the company expects HBM4 to surpass its predecessor, HBM3E, in both shipment volume and revenue during the fourth quarter. Strong server DDR5 sales and expanding demand for enterprise storage are also contributing to the broader opportunity.

The most significant signal, however, is the visibility into future demand. SK hynix has secured long-term agreements with 14 major customers covering more than half of its production capacity for 2027 and 2028. Despite plans to expand manufacturing capacity, the company expects supply constraints in the memory market to persist through 2030. That outlook suggests the current cycle is supported by structural demand, although forecasts remain subject to changing market conditions.

There is also a critical distinction between record revenue and sustainable profitability. AI infrastructure spending must continue generating sufficient economic returns to justify further investment. If data-center expansion slows, customers reduce capital expenditure, competing suppliers increase output faster than expected, or memory prices weaken, today's exceptional margins could face pressure. Rapid technological progress also means manufacturers must keep investing to remain competitive.

My market view: The long-term memory outlook remains constructive while AI infrastructure demand grows and advanced memory supply remains constrained. HBM4 adoption, server upgrades and long-term customer commitments provide meaningful support. However, the next phase will depend on whether demand continues to justify rising production costs and capacity investment.

The key measure of sustainability is not simply whether SK hynix can deliver another record quarter. It is whether the company can maintain pricing power, convert technological leadership into durable earnings and expand supply without creating a future glut. The AI memory opportunity remains substantial, but disciplined investment and real customer demand will determine how long this exceptional cycle lasts.
