A powerful rebound, but the real test is whether South Korea’s stock market can hold its ground.
South Korea’s KOSPI delivered a sharp comeback on October 27, climbing more than 4% in morning trading and reclaiming the psychologically important 5,700 level. The move followed a difficult stretch for Korean equities and reflected renewed appetite for semiconductor and AI-related stocks. Yet the most important question is not how quickly the index rallied, but whether buyers can sustain that momentum after such a volatile period.
The benchmark opened at 5,658.65, up 3.46% from its previous close of 5,469.47. It subsequently moved above 5,700, reaching approximately 5,717 during the morning session. By the close, however, the index had retreated to 5,638.34, finishing up 3.09%. That distinction matters: the rebound was substantial, but the market did not preserve its intraday highs.
Semiconductor stocks were at the center of the recovery.
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix led the advance as investor sentiment toward AI infrastructure improved. SK Square, which holds a stake in SK hynix, also recorded strong gains. The move followed a positive session for US semiconductor stocks, helping revive demand for Korean technology shares.
Foreign and institutional investors were significant net buyers, while retail investors sold into the strength. This buying pattern provided support for the rally, although a single session of inflows cannot establish that a sustained change in market positioning has begun.
The buy-side sidecar was a signal of just how fast the market was moving.
At approximately 10:13 a.m. local time, the Korea Exchange triggered a buy-side sidecar after KOSPI 200 futures rose more than 5% and remained above the threshold for the required period. The mechanism temporarily suspended the effect of program-trading buy orders for five minutes.
This is a temporary volatility-control measure, not a halt on all stock trading. Its activation highlighted the intensity of buying pressure, but it should not be interpreted as proof that the rally will continue.
What comes next for the KOSPI?
The 5,700 area is an important near-term reference point. A sustained move above it, supported by continued buying and strength across a wider range of sectors, would make the recovery more convincing. If the index repeatedly fails to hold above that level, profit-taking and renewed volatility could return.
The semiconductor outlook remains central. Earnings results, guidance on AI-related demand and expectations for future chip profitability could influence whether investors continue adding exposure or become more cautious. Broader market participation also matters because a rally concentrated in a few heavyweight companies can make the headline index appear stronger than the wider market.
My market view: October 27 demonstrated that buyers are still willing to step in aggressively after a sell-off. However, the retreat from the intraday high shows why confirmation matters more than the size of a single rebound. Sustained foreign demand, credible semiconductor earnings and the ability to defend reclaimed levels will be more meaningful than one explosive session.
The KOSPI has regained momentum, but the next phase depends on whether that momentum can turn into stability. In a market driven by AI expectations and sharp changes in sentiment, disciplined risk management remains essential.
