South Korea Jumps to 5,711 on Chip Stocks, but This Is the Second 4% Bounce in a Week
South Korea's KOSPI is up about 4.4%, or 241.75 points, at 5,711.22 in the morning session on October 27. Monday's close was 5,469.47, down 1.46%. A buy-side sidecar triggered at 10:13 a.m., the first in four trading days, a sign of how sharp the move was. The rally looks powerful, but the real test is whether chip earnings, foreign money and global AI sentiment can sustain it.
What drove the jump
Wall Street set the tone on Monday. The Nasdaq rose 0.82% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 2.82%, with Micron up about 3% and Broadcom up about 2.3%. The catalyst was Anthropic's IPO filing, which showed first-half revenue of about $16.3 billion and eased some worries about AI profitability. Oil also helped, with Brent settling at $115.81, down 0.8%.
Samsung, SK Hynix and the chip complex
At 10:15 a.m., SK Hynix was up 7% at 1,363,000 won and Samsung Electronics up 5.1% at 223,750 won. SK Square gained 10.8% to 852,000 won, Samsung Electro-Mechanics 8.6% and Hanmi Semiconductor 5.5%. These two giants are the biggest index weights, so today's KOSPI is effectively a chip trade. Outside semiconductors the picture is mixed, with Samsung Biologics down 4.1% and HD Hyundai Energy Solutions down 9.4%. Volume is the missing piece in this snapshot, so compare it with Monday's session at the close.
Who is buying
Foreign investors bought a net 409.1 billion won and institutions 228.1 billion, while retail investors sold 659.1 billion, taking profits. That mix is healthier than Monday, when foreigners sold a net 6.955 trillion won. One session of buying does not reverse that, and foreigners were net sellers of 719.9 billion won across October 19 to 23, including 863.7 billion of SK Hynix.
The warning: this has happened before
On October 21 the KOSPI also jumped more than 4% intraday, triggered a sidecar and closed at 5,735.66, up 3.29%. Within three sessions it was back at 5,469.47. Today's 5,711 sits just under that October 21 close, so the 5,735 to 5,790 zone is the first real test. The index also briefly broke below 6,000 during a chip rout on October 13, so this recovery is far from complete.
Earnings: the real catalyst
SK Hynix reports third-quarter results on October 28 and Samsung Electronics on October 29. I will watch high-bandwidth memory demand and pricing, DRAM prices, margins and capital expenditure. SK Hynix is also expected to detail shareholder returns, with reports of a special dividend of up to 16 trillion won. Strong HBM numbers and firm guidance would support the rally. Soft guidance, or capex rising faster than revenue, could bring selling back.
Global confirmation
Korea's 4.4% gain is far larger than the Nasdaq's 0.8%, so Korea is the high-beta responder. Japan confirmed the move, with the Nikkei up 1.9%, SoftBank up about 6% and Kioxia up nearly 8%. But US semiconductors are still down 12.2% this month, and the Nasdaq sits below its 50-day average near 26,600, with 349 new lows against 82 new highs on Monday. A Korea-only rally tends to fade. Microsoft and Alphabet report on October 28 and Amazon on October 29, and they decide whether the AI trade gets real follow-through.
Won, oil and the Fed
The won is steady at about 1,326 per dollar versus 1,323.1 at Monday's close, so currency is not the pressure point today. Oil is. Brent above $115 and a US 10-year yield near 5% are heavy for an energy importer with a chip-heavy index. The Fed decides on October 28 at 2 p.m. ET, which is early October 29 in Seoul. A hold at 4.0% is expected, and a hawkish tone on December would hit high-beta chips first.
Key levels from 5,711
Support: 5,600 (-2.0%), 5,500 (-3.7%), 5,469 (-4.2%, Monday's close)
Resistance: 5,735 (+0.4%), 5,790 (+1.4%), 6,000 (+5.1%)
Bullish: the index holds above 5,600 into the close on higher volume than Monday, foreigners stay net buyers and SK Hynix delivers. That opens 5,790 and then 6,000.
Neutral: price chops between 5,500 and 5,735 while the market waits for the Fed and earnings.
Bearish: a close back under 5,500 with foreign selling confirms a relief bounce and puts 5,469 back in play.
My view
The key question is whether the KOSPI can hold above the 5,500 to 5,600 region. Before calling this a trend change, I want a close above 5,600, foreigners as net buyers at the close, volume above the previous session and supportive guidance from SK Hynix and Samsung. Until then I treat it as a relief bounce. A close above 5,790 with foreign buying would turn it into a genuine recovery attempt. @Gate_Square
