XAU/USD Weekly Outlook: Can Gold Reclaim $4,100, or Is Another Breakdown Ahead?
Gold is entering a critical week where a short-term rebound could develop into a recovery—or become another selling opportunity. After suffering its sharpest weekly decline since June, XAU/USD recovered toward the $4,000 psychological level as oil prices eased and bargain hunters returned. However, a bounce from recent lows is not yet a confirmed trend reversal. The market still needs to overcome important resistance levels while investors prepare for the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 meeting and the upcoming US inflation data.
The technical structure remains bearish while gold trades below the $4,032–$4,075 resistance area. The first support zone lies around $3,986–$3,978, followed by the stronger $3,946–$3,963 demand region. If buyers defend these levels and push price above $4,032, gold could attempt a recovery toward $4,075. A sustained break above that level would improve the bullish case and bring $4,100–$4,145 into focus. A stronger move above $4,145 would be needed before calling the broader recovery more convincing.
The downside scenario deserves equal attention. If gold loses the $3,946–$3,963 support zone and selling pressure accelerates, the next important target is around $3,890. A decisive break below $3,890 could expose $3,765, turning the current correction into a deeper decline. These are conditional technical targets, not predictions that every level will be reached. The reaction at each support zone will matter more than the level itself.
The Federal Reserve is the major catalyst this week. Even if policymakers leave rates unchanged, their guidance about future decisions could move gold sharply. A more hawkish message, stronger inflation data, a firmer US dollar, or rising Treasury yields could increase pressure on the non-yielding metal. Conversely, softer inflation signals, easing yields, or a less restrictive policy outlook could support a recovery. Traders should avoid assuming that an unchanged rate decision is automatically bullish for gold; the market often reacts more strongly to what policymakers signal about the months ahead.
Oil prices and geopolitical developments add another layer of uncertainty. Lower crude prices can reduce immediate inflation concerns and help gold recover, but renewed supply disruptions could push energy prices higher and revive expectations of tighter monetary policy. Geopolitical risk can also increase safe-haven demand for gold. These forces can work in opposite directions, which is why headline-driven volatility may remain elevated throughout the week.
My base case is cautious while XAU/USD remains below $4,075. The first bullish signal would be a sustained recovery above $4,032, followed by a successful reclaim of $4,075. Until then, rallies may face selling pressure. A breakdown below $3,946 would shift attention toward $3,890, with $3,765 becoming a deeper downside reference if the lower support fails. For traders, the more disciplined approach is to wait for confirmation, define invalidation before entering, and size positions according to volatility rather than trying to predict the exact bottom.
Gold is now at a decision point. A successful defence of support could create the foundation for a recovery toward $4,100 and potentially $4,145. Failure to hold the major demand zone could instead open the door to another substantial decline. This week, the strongest signal will come from the combination of price structure, the Fed’s guidance, the dollar, and Treasury yields—not from one headline or one green candle.
