MSFT trades near $526.22 into Wednesday's report (after the close, call at 5:30 pm ET). The stock is up about 35% from its July 29 close of $390.54 and sits about 5% below its 52-week high of $553.72. That is the real setup: a stock that has already priced in a lot, facing numbers that must still impress. Here is my full breakdown.
1. The catalyst stack (Oct 28)
• Consensus: revenue about $90.6–90.7B, adjusted EPS about $4.71–4.73 (roughly +14% vs $4.13 a year ago)
• Company guide: revenue $89.85–90.95B, or 16–17% growth
• Last quarter: revenue $90.01B vs $87.62B expected, EPS $4.74 vs $4.24 expected
• The Fed decision lands the same day, hours before the print
Microsoft has beaten before, so a beat is the base case. The signal is how the market reads guidance.
2. Azure: the number that moves the stock
Azure grew 43% last quarter vs 40% expected and topped $100B in annual revenue. Management guided about 45% in constant currency and said growth should keep accelerating through the first half of FY27. BNP Paribas models 46% now and 49% next quarter. My read: 45% is the bar, 46%+ is a real beat, and anything under 44% would hurt. Azure is also now disclosed in dollars, which gives a cleaner read.
3. AI spend vs returns
Capex was $41B last quarter and is guided above $50B this quarter. The calendar 2026 outlook is about $175B, trimmed from about $190B in April. Copilot has passed 30M paid seats. I want to see Azure acceleration, Copilot growth and positive free cash flow together. If capex grows faster than revenue, margin worries return fast.
4. Technical map from $526.22
Older chart notes show $509–510 as resistance. Price has moved above it, so I now treat it as support.
Resistance
• $546.35 (+3.8%): has capped rallies three times since last year
• $553.72 (+5.2%): 52-week high
• $572.41 (+8.8%): breakout target
• $594.96 (+13.1%): next extension
Support
• $521.08 (-1.0%): Oct 22 close
• $507 (-3.6%): 50-day average
• $504.07 (-4.2%): range support
• $486.22 (-7.6%): break here turns the trend bearish
Momentum is neutral. RSI is near 50 on most feeds after running above 70 on Oct 13, so the rally cooled without breaking trend. The 50-day sits well above the 200-day (about $436), so the primary trend is still up. The stock slipped 2.2% on Oct 22 in the AI and chip selloff. It is consolidating inside a $504–$546 range.
🧪 5. Scenarios
🟢 Bull: Azure at 45–46%+, stronger forward guide, capex backed by revenue. A daily close above $546.35 on volume opens $553.72, then $572.41. The analyst consensus target of about $592 is +12.5% away.
🟡 Neutral: Azure near 44–45%, guidance in line. Expect chop between $510 and $546.
🔴 Bear: Azure under 44%, or capex up with a soft guide. A loss of $504 points to $486.
The Fed adds a second layer. At roughly 29.7x earnings, MSFT is sensitive to yields, so a hawkish tone plus mixed guidance could hit it twice.
6. My game plan
1. Do not trade the print blind. Results come after the close, so stops cannot protect against a gap. Size down or define your max loss first.
2. Wait for the first full session and trade the daily close against $546.35 and $504.07, not the after-hours spike.
3. Want volume above the roughly 23M-share average to trust a breakout.
4. Scale in with small entries, do not go all-in.
5. No chasing. If the move happens without you, the next setup is coming.
My signal: Azure at 45%+ with a firmer guide, followed by a close above $546.35, is bullish. A close below $504 means step back.
