Three central bank decisions, two data releases and three mega-cap earnings reports land inside about 48 hours. Instead of guessing which asset moves first, I’d map the clock and the levels.
1. The clock (UTC, with ET in brackets)
Wed 18:00 (2:00 pm ET): Fed decision, with the press conference 30 minutes later. Rates are 3.75%–4.00% after September’s hike.
Wed after the close: Microsoft and Alphabet.
Thu 12:30 (8:30 am ET): Q3 GDP first estimate (forecasts around 3.0%–3.2% against 2.2% prior), September PCE (headline about 3.6% against 3.4%, core about 3.1% against 3.0%) and jobless claims.
Thu 13:15: ECB, expected to hold. Thu after the close: Amazon.
Fri: Bank of Japan, expected to hold, plus the Q3 employment cost index.
The data lands 18.5 hours after the Fed (my math), so the market gets a second rate-relevant shock before it has digested the first.
2. “Which reacts first” is the wrong question
BTC trades around the clock, so it often prints first, but order isn’t the point. After the hot CPI, BTC fell about 4.4% peak to trough, against a dip of about 1.6% in gold and a 1.88% drop in the Nasdaq (my math from reported figures, different windows). Gold recovered quickly and BTC didn’t. The better question is which move holds.
3. The two-sided risk (my read)
Strong GDP plus hot core PCE raises December hike odds and yields, which pressures tech and crypto, and gold too, as it did on CPI day. Soft numbers could relieve tech, though soft growth with sticky inflation brings stagflation worry. Consumer sentiment at 48.0 and one-year inflation expectations at 4.7% already frame it.
4. Levels (from my screenshots)
BTC at 79,994: support at 79,880 (-0.1%), 50-day at 81,808 (+2.3%), resistance at 84,178 (+5.2%). Below support sit 77,020 (-3.7%) and the 99-day at 75,720 (-5.3%). RSI is 41.3.
Gold at 4,007: support at 3,979 (-0.7%), 50-day at 4,100 (+2.3%), 200-day at 4,186 (+4.5%), resistance at 4,247 (+6.0%). RSI is 35.0.
MSFT at 523.96: support at 506.80 (-3.3%), resistance at 545.84 (+4.2%), RSI 52.7.
GOOGL at 321.21: 0.3% above support at 320.24, about 6.9% below its averages, RSI 32.2.
AMZN at 248.28: support at 243.23 (-2.0%), resistance at 265.70 (+7.0%), RSI 43.4.
BTC and gold both sit within 0.7% of support. If one breaks and the other holds, that would tell me whether the market is pricing rates or risk. GOOGL reports at support with the weakest RSI of the three. The dollar isn’t in my chart set, so I’m giving no levels for it.
5. A simple if-then plan
If BTC closes below 79,880 after the Fed, I’d expect a test of 77,020. If it holds and reclaims 81,808, 84,178 comes into view. Same logic for gold around 3,979 and 4,100. If macro is mixed, the earnings after each close may set Thursday’s direction.
My take: I’m not picking a first mover. I’m watching whether BTC and gold hold support together. My approach is to avoid adding size inside the 18:00 and 12:30 UTC windows, since back-to-back events make fills and stops messy.
Not financial advice.
Which do you trust to lead this week: BTC, stocks, gold or the dollar? And what’s your line on BTC: 79,880 or 81,808?
