#USEarningsSeason #GOOGL
Alphabet is my preferred name this U.S. Earnings Season window running from October 26 to 30. The Federal Reserve decision, a cluster of Big Tech reports, and important US GDP and PCE data will dominate market attention. Among the names in the spotlight — $MSFT $GOOGL $AMZN $HOOD $COIN — I am most constructive on Alphabet (GOOGL).
Current trading levels show GOOGL closed at $320.21 on October 23, 2026, declining 1.24 percent on the day after opening near $320.88. The session range stretched from a low of $320.18 to a high of $324.53. Volume registered approximately 17.5 million shares, below the recent average daily volume that has hovered near 25 to 26 million shares. Even so, absolute dollar turnover remained substantial. Market capitalization sits near $3.92 trillion. The 52-week range runs from roughly $255 to $408.61, leaving the shares about 21 percent below the yearly high while still up approximately 27 percent over the trailing twelve months and modestly positive year-to-date. Three-year and five-year returns remain strongly positive at more than 130 percent in both cases.
Trailing-twelve-month metrics show robust profitability. EPS stands near $19.93, supporting a trailing P/E ratio of approximately 16.0 to 16.1 — one of the more reasonable multiples among mega-cap technology peers. Revenue on a trailing basis exceeds $400 billion. The company is scheduled to report third-quarter 2026 results after the close on October 28, 2026. Consensus expectations currently point to overall revenue growth in the mid-20s percent range and normalized EPS around the $3.00 level. Investors will focus heavily on Google Cloud performance, advertising trends, and capital expenditure commentary.
Google Cloud has become the standout growth driver. In the most recent reported quarter Cloud revenue reached approximately $24.8 billion, an increase of 82 percent year-over-year and a clear acceleration from prior periods. Cloud operating margin expanded sharply to the mid-30s percent range, more than doubling from levels seen a year earlier. The Cloud backlog has climbed to roughly $514 billion, providing multi-year visibility into future revenue. Management has indicated that a large portion of the backlog is tied to enterprise AI demand and multi-year contracts. Search and advertising remain the profit engine, with Search revenue still growing in the mid-to-high teens percent range and YouTube continuing to deliver solid advertising gains. Overall company revenue in the latest quarter came in near $120 billion, up approximately 24 percent year-over-year.
Capital expenditure has risen significantly as Alphabet scales AI infrastructure and custom silicon (TPUs). Full-year 2026 CapEx guidance has been raised into a range near $195 billion to $205 billion. Free cash flow turned temporarily negative in one recent quarter as a result of the investment cycle, yet the company maintains a strong balance sheet and continues to generate substantial operating cash flow. Liquidity in the stock itself remains excellent. Average daily volume in the mid-20s of millions of shares, combined with a large free float and typically tight spreads, allows institutional flows to enter and exit with limited friction. Short interest stays relatively modest as a percentage of float. Beta near 1.2 indicates moderate volatility relative to the broader market.
On the central question of whether AI investments can produce lasting growth, Alphabet presents a compelling case. The company controls both the infrastructure layer through Google Cloud and the consumer and enterprise distribution layers through Search, YouTube, Android, and Gemini. Custom TPUs reduce dependence on external GPU suppliers and improve cost efficiency. Cloud backlog growth and rising enterprise AI adoption suggest that the heavy spending is converting into contracted future revenue. Search continues to benefit from AI enhancements that improve relevance and advertiser returns, supporting the core high-margin advertising business while Cloud scales.
Earnings beats do not automatically produce immediate price gains, particularly when CapEx guidance is raised or free cash flow is temporarily pressured. Alphabet has experienced post-earnings volatility when investment intensity has surprised to the upside. However, sustained Cloud growth above 50 to 80 percent combined with stable or expanding Cloud margins has historically supported re-rating over subsequent quarters. The current setup — Cloud growing at 82 percent, backlog above $500 billion, and overall revenue growth still in the mid-20s percent range — appears constructive provided the October 28 report confirms the trajectory.
Relative to the other names highlighted this week, Alphabet offers a balanced mix of high-margin advertising cash flows and accelerating Cloud/AI growth at a more moderate valuation multiple than some peers. Microsoft provides strong Azure exposure with higher software margins. Amazon combines retail scale with AWS. Robinhood and Coinbase remain more sensitive to retail trading activity and digital asset market conditions. Alphabet’s combination of Search profitability, Cloud acceleration, and AI integration across products gives it a distinctive profile during a week that also features the Fed decision and GDP/PCE data.
Risks should not be ignored. Elevated capital expenditure could continue to pressure free cash flow if Cloud monetization lags. Competition in cloud and AI remains intense. Regulatory scrutiny around advertising and search continues. Valuation, while more reasonable than some peers on a trailing basis, still assumes continued execution on both advertising and Cloud. Macro uncertainty around interest rates and consumer spending could affect advertising budgets. These factors argue for measured position sizing rather than concentrated exposure.
Overall, the combination of current trading levels near $320, strong twelve-month price performance, Cloud revenue growth of 82 percent, a $514 billion backlog, a trailing P/E near 16, solid liquidity, and diversified AI monetization across Search, YouTube, and Cloud makes Alphabet my preferred name for this earnings window. The Fed decision and GDP/PCE releases will set the macro backdrop, yet company-specific delivery on Cloud growth and AI returns will likely determine the near-term path for $GOOGL. I look forward to the October 28 report and the full set of Big Tech results.
