The AI investment cycle is often discussed through finished chips, data centers, and cloud platforms, but an important part of the story begins much earlier: chip design. That is why Cadence Design Systems ($CDNS) deserves attention as it reports its third-quarter results today.

Cadence provides electronic design automation software that helps engineers design and verify increasingly complex semiconductor systems. As AI accelerators and advanced computing architectures become more demanding, the design process itself becomes a critical part of the technology supply chain.

My focus is not simply on whether revenue and earnings beat expectations. I want to understand whether management sees sustained demand across advanced computing, whether customers continue investing in more sophisticated chip designs, and what the company says about future growth.

A strong report and constructive guidance could support confidence in the broader semiconductor ecosystem. However, even a good result may disappoint investors if expectations are already too aggressive or forward guidance lacks momentum.

My view: watch the evidence of sustained demand, not just the excitement surrounding AI. The companies enabling the infrastructure behind AI may offer valuable clues about the durability of the investment cycle.
