Microsoft vs Alphabet vs Amazon: AI Earnings Could Trigger the Next Big Tech Move
The US tech earnings season is entering a critical stage. Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon are preparing to report their results, and investors are focused on one major question: Can AI investments generate enough revenue and profit to justify billions of dollars in spending?
My top pick is Microsoft because it combines Azure cloud growth, recurring software revenue, enterprise AI adoption, and strong financial foundations. However, Alphabet and Amazon also have significant growth opportunities, and earnings surprises could quickly change market sentiment.
1. Market Snapshot: October 23, 2026
The following figures represent the latest closing prices used in this analysis, not live Sunday trading prices.
Microsoft (MSFT): $524.51, up 0.66%.
Alphabet (GOOGL): $320.21, down 1.24%.
Amazon (AMZN): $248.00, down 0.95%.
Approximate market capitalizations:
Microsoft: $3.90 trillion.
Alphabet: $3.92 trillion.
Amazon: $2.68 trillion.
Trading volumes were approximately 13.68 million shares for Microsoft, 17.57 million for Alphabet, and 25.37 million for Amazon.
These mixed movements show that even when the long-term AI story remains attractive, stock prices can fluctuate as investors adjust their expectations before earnings.
2. Microsoft: My Top Pick
Microsoft is scheduled to release its fiscal 2027 first-quarter results on October 28, after the market closes.
Analysts expect approximately $90.63 billion in revenue and adjusted earnings per share of $4.71. These estimates suggest revenue growth of around 16.7% and earnings growth of approximately 14% year over year.
In the previous quarter, Microsoft generated $90.01 billion in revenue, up 17.7% year over year, and adjusted EPS of $4.74, exceeding the consensus estimate of $4.24.
The next challenge is maintaining strong growth while AI infrastructure spending continues to increase.
Azure: The Biggest Catalyst
Azure remains Microsoft's most important growth driver. Analysts are expecting approximately 44%–45% growth, with one estimate at 44.8%.
Azure provides the computing infrastructure businesses need to develop AI applications, process data, and automate operations. As more companies adopt AI, demand for cloud computing could continue expanding.
Microsoft also benefits from Office, Windows, LinkedIn, GitHub, and Copilot. These established products provide recurring revenue and create opportunities to monetize AI through existing customers.
If Azure growth meets or exceeds expectations, Microsoft could receive another boost in investor confidence.
Microsoft Technical Levels
Current reference price: $524.51.
Resistance: $525–$530.
Major upside reference: $550–$554.
Potential bullish extension: $575–$600 if earnings and momentum remain strong.
Support: $515–$516.
Major psychological support: $500.
Further downside reference: $490.
These are analytical reference levels, not guaranteed support or resistance.
Trading strategy: A breakout above $530 with strong volume could indicate improving momentum. A sustained move above $550 could open the possibility of further gains if earnings guidance supports the bullish outlook.
On the downside, a break below $515 could increase selling pressure. A sustained move below $500 would weaken the short-term structure and require a reassessment of the trend.
My approach is to avoid taking an oversized position before earnings.
Even strong companies can fall when results fail to meet elevated expectations.
3. Alphabet: The AI and Advertising Challenger
Alphabet closed at $320.21, down 1.24%, on October 23. Its market capitalization was approximately $3.92 trillion, while its reported trailing revenue was around $445.87 billion.
Alphabet's next earnings report is scheduled for October 28.
One analyst forecast expects approximately $3.07 EPS and $111.42 billion in revenue, while broader expectations are around $2.98 EPS and $111.03 billion in revenue.
Google Cloud is another major catalyst. One forecast projects quarterly cloud revenue of approximately $29.29 billion, representing potential year-over-year growth of 93%. This remains an analyst estimate, not a confirmed result.
Alphabet's strengths include Google Search, YouTube advertising, Google Cloud, and Gemini AI. If AI improves search monetization and cloud growth continues accelerating, the company could deliver impressive results.
However, investors must watch whether AI infrastructure costs rise faster than revenue and whether changes in search behavior affect advertising economics.
My view: Alphabet offers significant upside potential, but the market needs evidence that AI is strengthening its core business rather than simply increasing expenses.
4. Amazon: AWS and AI Infrastructure
Amazon closed at $248.00, down 0.95%, with a market capitalization of approximately $2.68 trillion. Its reported trailing revenue was around $775.68 billion, up approximately 15.8% year over year.
Amazon is scheduled to report earnings on October 29. One published consensus estimate expects approximately $202.16 billion in revenue and $1.96 EPS.
Amazon Web Services is central to its investment case. Growing demand for cloud computing, AI infrastructure, and data processing could support AWS revenue and profitability.
Amazon also benefits from online retail, advertising, subscriptions, and other services, providing several sources of revenue growth.
The biggest concern is capital expenditure. Data centers, advanced chips, energy, and AI infrastructure require enormous investment.
If AWS growth accelerates and management demonstrates improving returns on AI spending, Amazon could attract renewed buying interest. If spending rises faster than revenue, however, investors may become concerned about profitability.
My view: Amazon is a strong AI infrastructure candidate, but AWS performance and capital expenditure guidance will be crucial.
5. Can AI Spending Deliver Real Profits?
Investors are no longer satisfied with AI announcements alone. They want measurable revenue growth, sustainable margins, and evidence that infrastructure investments will generate attractive returns.
For Microsoft, monitor Azure growth, Copilot adoption, and capital expenditure.
For Alphabet, focus on Google Cloud, advertising revenue, and AI monetization.
For Amazon, watch AWS growth, operating income, and infrastructure spending.
The broader market also matters. Higher bond yields, weaker technology-sector momentum, or disappointing forward guidance could push these stocks lower even if quarterly earnings beat expectations.
Three scenarios are worth considering:
Bullish scenario: Earnings beat expectations, cloud growth accelerates, and management delivers strong guidance. Buyers could push prices above resistance.
Neutral scenario: Results are solid but already reflected in valuations.
Stocks may consolidate while investors assess future spending and profitability.
Bearish scenario: Cloud growth disappoints or capital expenditure increases without convincing evidence of returns. Stocks could decline as market expectations reset.
6. Final Verdict: Microsoft Leads My Watchlist
My preference this week is Microsoft first, Alphabet second, and Amazon third. This ranking reflects my assessment of their business models and AI monetization opportunities, not a guarantee of investment performance.
Microsoft's combination of Azure, recurring software revenue, enterprise customers, and Copilot creates a compelling long-term growth story.
Alphabet could benefit from accelerating cloud demand and AI-driven improvements, while Amazon offers substantial exposure to AI infrastructure through AWS.
However, strong earnings do not automatically mean higher stock prices. Valuation, forward guidance, capital expenditure, market sentiment, and trading volume all influence the final reaction.
My strategy is to avoid chasing pre-earnings volatility and wait for price action to confirm the market's direction.
For Microsoft, $530 and $550 are important upside references, while $515 and $500 are key downside levels to monitor.
