#SpotGoldFallsBelow$4000 $XAUUSD $XAUT #ShareWeekly
Gold slipped under $4,000 in Asian trade, with the low around $3,987, its first break of that level since July. My view: this isn’t a safe-haven failure so much as an oil-and-Fed story with forced selling on top, and the next move hinges on one line on my chart.
1. Gold fell on the wrong day
Thursday was a classic risk-off session. Equities sold off hard and the 10-year yield dropped back below 5%. Both normally help gold. Instead it fell about 2.8% to roughly $4,023, then broke $4,000 on Friday. When the usual helpers fail, the driver is somewhere else.
2. The driver is oil feeding the Fed
Brent above $110 keeps inflation expectations high, and markets price a December Fed hike at roughly 75% to 90% depending on the source. Fed officials have signaled no urgency for the Oct 27 to 28 meeting, so I read that meeting as a tone test, not a move. Higher real yields raise the cost of holding a metal that pays nothing. The dollar is secondary: it sat near a three-week low on Thursday and gold still fell.
3. Safe-haven demand hasn’t left, but the marginal buyer has
Central banks bought a record 289 tonnes in Q2 while gold ETFs shed about 45 tonnes, per World Gold Council data cited by ING. ING also notes official buying this year is likely to land below 2025. One report has spot gold more than a quarter below its January high above $5,500. My interpretation: official buyers set the floor over months, but ETF and speculative flows set the daily price, and those are the flows turning.
4. My chart levels (from my daily charts)
XAUUSD 4,020 sits 0.3% above my support at 4,007.94, 2.75% below the shortest MA at 4,130.57, and about 5% below the 4,220 to 4,227 zone. RSI is about 34.7 (about 30.9 on my XAUT chart). MACD is under its signal line, but the histogram is small (-6), so selling isn’t accelerating. Nothing is marked below 4,007.94 on my chart, so the daily close matters more than an Asian wick.
5. What brings buyers back
A softer Fed tone, easing oil, or lower yields. Core PCE on Oct 29 is the next inflation read. A hawkish tone with oil still climbing keeps the pressure on, and then the debate becomes how far below $4,000 buyers are willing to wait.
My take: I’m not catching this one yet. 4,007.94 is my line. A daily close back above ~4,130 would tell me buyers are defending the break. A daily close below 4,007.94 means I wait for a base rather than guess a bottom. In both cases I’m watching oil and the Fed, not the dollar.
Not financial advice.
Do you think official-sector buying is enough to hold $4,000, or does gold need oil to cool first? And what’s your line: 4,000 or 3,500?
