WARSH’S IMF SPEECH:

HAWKISH OR DOVISH? WILL BITCOIN REBOUND OR PULL BACK?

My Market View | October 16, 2026
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has completed his fireside chat with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Bangkok. With US inflation heating up and the October 27–28 FOMC meeting approaching, global markets are searching for one critical answer: will the Fed raise rates again, and what does that mean for Bitcoin?

My view is that Warsh delivered a balanced but inflation-focused message, with a less immediately hawkish tone than some traders feared. He reaffirmed price stability, refused to prejudge future meetings, and highlighted AI investment as a major long-term growth opportunity.

This is not a dovish policy reversal. It is a signal that the Fed wants more economic evidence before committing to its next move.

1. Hawkish or Dovish?

My Answer
Three messages from Warsh deserve attention.

Price stability remains the priority. September CPI inflation was reported at 3.7% year-on-year, while PPI reached 6.3%. These readings indicate persistent inflation pressure and make an early policy pivot difficult.

Warsh refused to promise another rate hike. He stated that he does not believe in prejudging meetings or announcing what he might do during the remaining meetings of 2026. The October and December decisions will depend on incoming data.

AI and structural investment could support growth. Warsh described AI as a transformative economic development, while warning that its transition could be bumpy. Strong investment can improve productivity, but near-term demand pressures and uncertain employment effects remain important risks.

My conclusion: Warsh is hawkish on inflation but cautious about pre-committing to another increase. Markets initially interpreted his remarks as less hawkish than feared, with reported October rate-hike expectations falling toward 15% from above 25%. These are reported market estimates, not a guarantee of the Fed’s decision.

Will the Fed raise rates again?

I would not rule it out. If inflation remains elevated, oil prices rise again, or economic demand stays strong, December tightening risks could increase. If inflation cools and employment weakens, a hold becomes easier to justify.

2. Live Market Snapshot:
October 16
The latest accessible snapshot provides a useful view of how markets are reacting. These figures are timestamped observations, not guaranteed current executable prices.

BTC: $81,892.23, up 0.49%.

ETH: $2,433.86, up 2.24%.

Gold: $4,204.30 per ounce, up 0.82%.

WTI crude oil: $95.67 per barrel, down 0.86%.

S&P 500: Previous close at 7,744.06, up 0.33%.

Nasdaq Composite: Previous close at 26,713.03, up 0.08%.

Dow Jones: Previous close at 52,177.69, up 1.08%.

DXY: Around 101.80, down
approximately 0.15% in the reported post-speech reaction.

EUR/USD: Around 1.1230.

The weaker dollar and recovering risk sentiment suggest that traders welcomed the absence of a fresh tightening signal. However, the market reaction is mixed: inflation remains high, oil is elevated compared with earlier periods, and technology investment concerns continue to create volatility.

The next question is whether this relief can attract sustained buying or whether traders will sell into resistance.

3. Bitcoin: Rebound or Pullback?

BTC is holding around $82,000 after recovering from below $80,000 earlier in the week. That recovery is constructive, but Bitcoin has not yet confirmed a sustained bullish reversal.

The key drivers are dollar appetite. If yields decline and the dollar remains weak, BTC could benefit. If inflation concerns return, crypto could quickly face renewed selling pressure.

My BTC levels for Gate traders:
$81,500–$81,700: Near-term support. Holding this zone would preserve the short-term recovery structure.

Below $81,500: A daily close below support would weaken the setup and expose the possibility of a retest near $79,800.

Above $82,500: A convincing breakout with rising volume would strengthen the bullish case.
Mid-$80,000s: A potential next upside area if the breakout holds and buying momentum continues.
These are working technical levels from the current market analysis, not guaranteed targets.

My preferred scenario is a rebound only after BTC breaks resistance with meaningful volume. If price repeatedly fails around $82,500, buyers may be losing momentum. If support breaks, the market could move lower despite the initially positive speech reaction.
My verdict: cautiously bullish above support, but confirmation is still required.

4. How Should Gate Traders Position?

Rather than guessing the Fed’s decision, I would let BTC’s price structure determine the next move.
Bullish scenario: BTC holds $81,500–$81,700, buying volume increases, and price closes convincingly above $82,500. This would strengthen the case for a move toward the mid-$80,000s.

Bearish scenario: BTC loses $81,500 on a daily closing basis, selling volume increases, and the dollar or Treasury yields strengthen. This would increase the risk of a move toward $79,800.

Sideways scenario: BTC stays between support and resistance without a convincing volume expansion. In this situation, waiting for confirmation may be better than chasing small moves.

On Gate, I would monitor the BTC/USDT chart, recent candle closes, volume, and open interest together. Rising open interest during a breakout can indicate increasing participation, but it can also mean greater liquidation risk. Funding rates and liquidation data can help reveal whether positioning is becoming overcrowded.

I would avoid oversized leveraged positions around major economic releases. Define the invalidation level before entry, keep position sizes controlled, and never assume that a Fed speech guarantees a particular direction.

5. Ethereum: Stronger Percentage Gain, but Will It Continue?

ETH was reported at $2,433.86, up 2.24% in the accessible market snapshot. Its stronger percentage gain compared with BTC suggests that the recovery is not limited to Bitcoin alone.

However, one session of outperformance does not confirm a lasting trend.
For ETH, I would watch whether it maintains strength around the $2,400 area, whether buying volume remains healthy, and whether BTC holds its own support. A sustained ETH recovery alongside BTC strength would support a broader crypto rebound.
If BTC breaks down, ETH could also reverse despite its recent relative strength.
Gate traders should avoid entering ETH solely because its percentage gain is larger. The quality of the breakout, trading volume, and overall market liquidity matter more than a single green candle.

6. Gold, Dollar and Stocks: What Do They Tell Us?

Gold near $4,204 reflects continued demand amid inflation uncertainty and geopolitical risks. A weaker dollar can support gold, but higher real yields may limit further gains.
The dollar’s move toward 101.80 suggests that Warsh’s refusal to signal immediate tightening reduced some short-term pressure on risk assets. However, persistent inflation could reverse this move.

US equities also showed resilience, with the S&P 500 up 0.33% and the Dow Jones up 1.08% in the reported previous session. Warsh’s AI investment comments may support the longer-term outlook for technology and growth companies, but elevated rates remain a valuation risk.

Oil is another important variable. Higher energy costs can complicate the inflation outlook, potentially forcing the Fed to maintain restrictive policy for longer.
For crypto, the most supportive combination would be a softer dollar, stable or falling yields, and improving risk appetite. A stronger dollar alongside rising yields would create a more difficult environment for BTC and ETH.

7. What Could Happen at the October FOMC?

The October 27–28 meeting is the next major catalyst.
I will focus on three developments before the decision:
Inflation: Do upcoming data confirm that price pressures remain persistent?
Employment: Is economic demand resilient, or is the labor market weakening?
Financial conditions: Are Treasury yields and the dollar rising or falling?
If inflation cools without a major employment deterioration, markets could gain confidence in a policy hold. If inflation remains stubborn, traders may increase expectations of further tightening, even if October ends without another hike.
Warsh has not promised a pause, and he has not confirmed another increase. The data must settle the question.

Final Verdict: My Answer to Gate Square’s Weekly Topic
Will Warsh be hawkish or dovish? My answer is balanced but inflation-focused. He remains committed to price stability, yet his refusal to pre-announce a decision makes the immediate message less hawkish than an explicit signal of another increase.

Will the Fed continue raising rates? Another hike remains possible, particularly if inflation persists. I would not treat the reported 15% October probability as certainty, and December remains an important policy risk.

Will BTC rebound or pull back? I lean toward a cautious rebound while BTC holds $81,500–$81,700. A confirmed break above $82,500 with stronger volume would improve the outlook. A daily close below support would increase the risk of a pullback toward $79,800.

My strategy on Gate is to trade confirmed price action, monitor liquidity and derivatives positioning, and avoid chasing headlines. The market may welcome Warsh’s balanced message today, but inflation data and the next FOMC decision will determine whether this recovery has lasting strength.
