#SpotGoldRecoversPostCPILosses Gold gave traders a proper roller coaster this week. It dropped on hot inflation data, then climbed right back. With spot now around 4,157, here is the story as a three-day timeline, followed by the indicator report card and the levels I'm watching.

WEDNESDAY, OCT 14: THE DROP

The September CPI came in at 3.7% year over year against 3.6% expected, with core at 2.6% against 2.5%. Gold's first reaction was the textbook one, as Treasury yields and the dollar rose together. Gold fell 1.3% that session, and it dipped below $4,100 for the first time since early August. It touched a one-week low near $4,073. Silver took it harder: futures fell as much as 6% to about $55.56, a three-month low.

THURSDAY, OCT 15: THE BOUNCE

Spot gold rose 1.3% to $4,159, while futures jumped 1.9% to $4,183.90. The helpers were the dollar and yields: the dollar slipped 0.5% and the 10-year Treasury yield fell to a three-week low. Rate-hike fear also cooled. The odds of an October hike briefly surged after CPI, then fell back toward roughly a quarter as Fed officials argued for patience.

FRIDAY, OCT 16: THE FINISH

In the Asian session, spot gold rose 1% to around $4,146, essentially recovering all losses since the CPI release. The current 4,157 print sits just above that, so the post-CPI dip is fully erased for now.

INDICATOR REPORT CARD

- RSI (14): 52.57, neutral.
- MACD: 6.157, a mild buy.
- ADX: 18.22, neutral, which points to a weak trend.
- Stochastic RSI: 1.9, oversold.
- Moving averages: split evenly, 6 buy and 6 sell. The 50-day SMA is 4,139.95 and the 200-day SMA is 4,151.26, so price is hugging both.
- 4-hour chart: price trades below the 100-period SMA, and MACD is negative and under its signal line with a contracting histogram.
- Daily signal: one tracker shows Sell on the daily timeframe.
- Structure: gold has been stuck in a sideways range for 12 trading sessions.

Verdict: mixed. Momentum is neutral, the trend is weak, and the bounce has not yet changed the structure.

LEVELS LADDER

Resistance
- 4,180: the 100-period SMA on the 4-hour chart.
- 4,215 to 4,227, then 4,276 to 4,289: the next two resistance zones on the daily map. One desk calls $4,200 a major hurdle.

Support
- 4,104 to 4,113, then 4,064 to 4,074, then 4,017 to 4,040: the three support layers on the daily map.
- One bearish setup targets 4,020 if gold settles below 4,125.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gold is still far from its peak. It was priced around $5,600 at its January high, so today's price is roughly a quarter below the record by my math.

WHAT COULD MOVE IT NEXT

- Producer prices were also hot, with a 1.3% monthly rise against roughly 0.6% expected, so inflation pressure is not going away.
- Geopolitics: a breakthrough in US-Iran negotiations could trigger a strong gold rally, as traders would scale back rate-hike expectations.
- The Fed: the next meeting is October 27-28.
- Tone check: Saxo's Ole Hansen says the technical outlook remains fragile even after the recovery.

THREE SCENARIOS

1. Bull: gold holds above 4,104, clears 4,138 to 4,149, and heads toward 4,215.
2. Base: gold chops between 4,100 and 4,200 until the next catalyst.
3. Bear: gold loses 4,100, then 4,065, with 4,020 in view.

The recovery is real, but it is a rebound inside a range, not a breakout. The 4,200 area is the level that would change the story. Until then, I'd rather respect the range than chase it.
