#SpotGoldRecoversPostCPILosses #ShareWeekly $XAUT

Hot inflation is supposed to be gold-friendly, yet gold dropped after CPI, then took most of it back overnight. Before calling this a reversal or a new leg, here’s how I’d untangle it.

1. The move in numbers
Spot gold slipped about 1.5% after the release and hit a one-week low near $4,073, briefly down more than 1.6%. In Asian trading it rebounded about 1% to roughly $4,146, essentially erasing the loss. That’s about +1.8% off the low (my math).

2. Why gold sold off on an inflation beat
My read: the market treated this CPI as a rates story, not an inflation-hedge story. Core beat, the Fed already hiked in September, and the odds of another hike on Oct 27–28 rose (estimates vary by source, roughly 30% to 44%). Higher rates raise the cost of holding an asset that pays no yield, and the dollar firmed near an 18-month high right after the print.

3. Why it bounced
The dollar gave back its post-CPI gains and yields dipped overnight. One report ties that to heavy foreign Treasury buying, but I’d treat it as single-source. Middle East tensions and AI-investment debt worries were also cited as safe-haven support. None of that changes the bigger thesis. It mostly reverses the knee-jerk reaction.

4. The part that bothers me
One report says gold is down more than 20% since the energy shock tied to the Middle East conflict began feeding inflation fears and tighter policy. A classic safe haven falling that far during a conflict tells me gold is trading as a rates asset right now, not a fear asset. If yields rise again, it struggles.

5. Chart check (XAUT daily, levels from my screenshot)
Price is around 4,129.4.

Support at 4,080.9: about -1.2%
Resistance line at 4,250.2: about +2.9%
99-day at 4,257.2: +3.1%, 50-day at 4,291.2: +3.9%, 200-day at 4,364.3: +5.7%
RSI is around 39. MACD is -41.3 versus a signal of -45.4, with a small positive histogram of +4.1.

Price is still below all three averages. The MACD histogram flipping slightly positive is a stabilization attempt, not a trend change, since both lines remain below zero. On paper, up to 4,250 versus down to 4,081 is roughly 2.5:1. But a downtrend deserves skepticism when resistance, the 99-day and the 50-day are all stacked between 4,250 and 4,291.

6. Gold vs stocks vs BTC
Gold fell about 1.5–1.6% and recovered. The Nasdaq fell 1.88%. BTC dropped about 4.4% peak to trough and, on my chart, is still around 3.7% below its pre-print level. The time windows differ, so treat it as a rough comparison (my math). Gold absorbed the shock fastest.

Today’s test: PPI and retail sales are due at 8:30 ET. If producer prices echo CPI, hike odds climb and this rebound faces its first real test.

My take: short-term reversal, not yet a new leg. For another leg I’d want a daily close above the 4,250–4,291 cluster and hike odds cooling. Until then I see the bounce as relief inside a downtrend. A move below 4,081 brings the 4,000 area into view.

Not financial advice.

Do you see gold as an inflation hedge or a rates trade right now? And are you waiting for PPI before positioning?
