#USSeptemberPPIReleased #ShareWeekly #USSeptemberCPITopsEstimates $BTC
The PPI lands at 8:30 AM ET today (5:30 PM Pakistan time), alongside retail sales, one day after a CPI that missed by a tenth and moved the Fed’s odds. I’m writing before the print, so this is a reading guide, not a reaction post.
1. What the street expects
A Dow Jones survey has PPI at +0.6% m/m and 5.5% y/y, up from +0.4% and 5.4% in August. A 0.6% month annualizes to about 7.4% (my math), so even “in line” is a faster pace than August’s. One independent estimate I read sits above consensus. Treat that as a view, not a fact.
2. Why the headline isn’t the point
August was an energy story: energy +4.2% (diesel +24.1%), goods +1.1%, services just +0.1%, core +0.2% against 0.3% expected. Brent rose more than 14% in September, so energy likely lifts the headline again. The Fed can look through some of that, so I’ll read core first. Second is the index that strips out food, energy and trade services (+0.3% in August, 4.7% y/y), because trade margins swing wildly month to month.
3. Why it still matters after CPI
Core CPI printed 0.3% against 0.2% expected. Banks use PPI components to refine their core PCE estimates, and September PCE comes later this month. August core PCE was +0.2%, below forecasts. So PPI’s job today is to confirm or soften the core story. October hike odds went from about 22% before CPI to roughly 35–50% intraday, then settled near a third. December sits around 94%. The meeting is Oct 27 to 28.
4. How BTC traded hot PPIs this year
Two cases I found. In May (April PPI 6.0% against 4.9% forecast), BTC slipped below $80,000 and traded near $79,700. On Sept 10 (5.4% against 5.3%), BTC fell about 1.4% to under $77,000. Both times direction followed the surprise. That’s a small sample, so it’s a pattern to respect, not a rule.
5. Three outcomes (my thresholds)
Cool (headline 0.4% or less, soft core): October odds drift back toward the pre-CPI zone, relief for risk assets.
In line: nothing new, and the CPI repricing stands.
Hot (headline 0.8%+ or core 0.4%+): hike odds head back toward 50%, yields lead, and BTC tests $80,000.
Yields are the backdrop. The 10-year touched 5.34% on Oct 1, the highest since early 2002 per one report, so holding a non-yielding asset costs a lot right now.
6. Where BTC sits
BTC is near $80.8k, about 1% above $80,000 and about 0.5% under its 50-day average at ~81.2k on my chart. It’s already close to the line, so a hot print has less room to absorb.
My take: I’m using PPI as confirmation, not a trigger. Retail sales hits at the same minute, so the first candle will be noisy. I’d read core first, then decide, instead of chasing 8:30.
Not financial advice.
If core CPI was already hot, does a hot PPI even add new information? And are you trading the print or waiting for the dust to settle?
