#ASMLTSMCQ3EarningsSoon ASML’s €11.7 Billion Quarter Meets TSMC’s AI Chip Boom: Can Earnings Sustain the Semiconductor Rally?
As of October 15, 2026, the semiconductor narrative has shifted from preview to live results. ASML has already reported its third-quarter figures, while TSMC’s full earnings release is scheduled for today. The central comparison is now clear: ASML’s equipment backlog and capacity outlook versus TSMC’s ability to convert record AI-driven revenue into sustainable profits and margins.
ASML delivered a record quarter. Total net sales reached €11.662 billion, net income came in at €4.960 billion, and gross margin expanded to 57.5 percent. These results sat at the high end of prior guidance and marked clear sequential improvement from Q2, when sales were €9.326 billion, net income €2.918 billion, and gross margin 54.0 percent. New lithography systems sold rose to 113 units from 86 in the prior quarter. Installed Base Management sales of €3.289 billion exceeded guidance and provided the primary lift to profitability. Net system sales totaled approximately €8.4 billion, including €4.1 billion from EUV.
Management’s forward view is equally important. ASML guided Q4 net sales between €14.2 billion and €15.2 billion with a gross margin around 57 percent. Full-year 2026 total net sales are now expected at €44 billion to €45 billion (lower end raised) with a gross margin near 56 percent. The company stated that customers continue to raise short- and medium-term demand forecasts, driven by the expected size and duration of AI-related investments. Critically, ASML noted that under current plans its 2027–2028 supply may not fully meet customer demand and is investigating capacity increases beyond the previously communicated 30 percent expansion.
TSMC has already disclosed the revenue side of its quarter through monthly sales. Q3 revenue reached NT$1.49 trillion, or approximately $46.71 billion, up roughly 50–51 percent year over year and 17.6 percent sequentially. The figure exceeded the company’s July guidance range of $44.6–$45.8 billion. Consensus expectations heading into today’s report call for net profit of about NT$746.3 billion, an increase of approximately 65 percent year over year and a sixth consecutive record quarter.
The margin test is the key remaining variable. TSMC’s earlier Q3 guidance pointed to a gross margin of 65–67 percent (down from 67.7 percent in Q2) and an operating margin of 56–58 percent (down from 60.3 percent). The expected compression reflects the early costs of the 2nm ramp lower initial yields and higher depreciation plus the impact of overseas fab expansion. Consensus implies a net margin near 50 percent, lower than the prior quarter’s peak.
AI infrastructure demand continues to link the two companies. Nvidia and other high-performance computing customers are driving advanced-node and advanced-packaging (CoWoS) utilization at TSMC. ASML’s customers, including TSMC, are simultaneously increasing equipment forecasts, creating a potential bottleneck in 2027–2028. ASML’s ability to supply the required lithography tools therefore becomes a leading indicator of how much of the AI chip boom can actually be manufactured.
Market reaction so far has been cautious. Despite ASML’s strong numbers and raised guidance, semiconductor shares have faced multi-day pressure amid higher interest rates, elevated valuations, and questions about the duration of AI infrastructure spending. TSMC shares recovered modestly ahead of today’s release after recent weakness, but the bar for a positive response is high because the revenue beat was already known.
The decisive analytical comparison remains ASML’s forward capacity signal against TSMC’s profit conversion. ASML shows that equipment demand is still rising and may exceed planned supply. TSMC will show today whether the already-reported revenue surge is translating into the margins and guidance needed to keep the AI investment cycle financially sustainable. Strong results alone will not automatically lift share prices if expectations remain elevated and broader risks rates, valuations, export restrictions, or any slowdown in AI spending persist. The numbers released by ASML and those expected from TSMC today define the current state of that trade-off. @Gate_Square
